I have some questions regarding the origin of some of Ralph McQuarrie's art for 'Return of the Jedi'. I'd like to know if these paintings were made for 'RotJ' or if they were made after 'RotJ' for the 'Illustrated SW Universe'.

1) The first one is of the Rebel Briefing. It must have been drawn after the movie's release because this is almost exactly like the movie. I have a feeling it was used for commercial reasons?

2) Both of these paintings contain Vader & Luke in what would have been the Emperor's lair. Of course this location didn't appear in 'RotJ'. But were they made for the movie?

3) The third one is the painting with the two Death Stars. Did MQ draw this before 'RotJ' or after the movie was released?

I'm hoping someone can help me and please provide the source where you've read the answers to my questions. Thanks happy

I'm under the impression that all of his works were completed prior to the film. They were done before each film to help the set builders and screen writers conceptualize many of the locations and objects.

the ones for 2 and 3 were made before, because they're based on the old draft concepts of the duel taking place on Coruscant, then called Had Abaddon, in Palpatine's volcanic underground, and of the Death Stars in orbit above it, where the Rebels would attack
all of which later got moved to Endor and the (single) Second Death Star

The last two definitly were made before the film--in Lucas' original script there were two death stars and the Emperor had his throne below Had Abaddon in a lava pit. The rebel briefing painting I don't know for sure but it most likely was a concept painting done before the film.

edit

I just checked my Lucasfilm Archive book, and indeed that rebel briefing painting was concept art before the film was shot (it appears that the version you have there is heavily cropped).

Yep, I checked it as well, I didn't remember at all that book had that painting.

I still have a very hard time believing this was made as a true production painting. In my opinion it's even impossible. The painting features extras such as Yutani, Judder Page, 's Too Vees and even their position is correct compared to the movie. My guess is that McQuarrie made this painting from a photograph that was taken on the set.

I love that painting of Vader and Luke walking into Darth Sidious' lair. Very cool.
