Because he knew that the survival of the Jedi later on down the road was more important than fighting the Empire right then and there. Had he led a rebellion from the get-go, there'd be a good chance that he would have been killed. Had that happened, then the Jedi Order would have been destroyed altogether and Luke Skywalker would have been some farmboy for the rest of his life.

He knew as Yoda did, that the children of Skywalker would be the key to fulfilling the Will of the Force. With Obi-Wan specifically, there may have been a bit of fulfilling his duty to his old friend by watching out for his son and defending him against the monster his friend had become.

Perhaps because Anakin was so strong in the Force it was assumed that his offspring would also inherit his powerful connection to the Force and therefore have a better chance of defeating the Sith.

Why was the survival or revival of the Jedi Order so important . . . especially later down the road?

Because a renewed Jedi Order would be able to keep the peace in the galaxy. In the EU, Luke's Jedi trainees are front and center in a lot of the major conflicts (i.e. the Yuuzhan Vong war).

Because only a Jedi could defeat the Sith.

The Sith would have escaped that just in time They were already dead by the time Lando/Wedge reached the reactor
(and Dark Empire doesn't exist )

It would've compromised the positions of Bail Organa and Mon Mothma. Had Obi-Wan emerged as a leader in the emerging Rebel Alliance, the Empire would've taken the threat more seriously and crushed the Rebellion before it had gained any momentum.
Seeing as both Obi-Wan and Yoda were joint #1 on the most wanted list, it was all for the best that they went into hiding.

He could have ... he also may not have.
Luke was hustling - because he damn well knew the DS2 was gonna get rocked.
Palps did not know nothing ... his best legion was bested by Chewie, and some Ewoks.
The point is - it does not take a Jedi to kill a Sith - Palps and Vader were in a dangerous spot. And I contend they were toast had Luke been bested or not even present.

And? Anakin(redeemed and a Jedi) destroyed the Sith. Palpatine was dead by the time Wedge and Lando destroyed the Death Star.

Han Solo smoked Vader in Star Wars.
For the plot, they had to have Vader survive the Trench. But I see no rule about Sith having some "magic spell" that protects them from a Non-Jedi death.
Do you?
