No, but with the Emperor's foresight they'll be less able to surprise him. We saw how helpless Han was before Vader on the ground.

I think it was a combo of guilt and the fact he wanted Sidious brought out of power.

Because he was too old for crazy adventures. Plus Luke had the potential to defeat the Emporer and destroy the sith. Plus who would Vader be more merciful to? His old master who dismembered and fried him, or his son, the only reminder of Padme he has.
Plus if he joined the Rebelion, Vader and the Emporer would go to the ends of the galaxy to destroy them. Without Obi Wan the Rebel is viewed pitiful and laughed at by the Emporer, sure they're a threat but they have no force users until Luke joins, which makes them a giant target then.

dised101 posted: Why does Obi-Wan decide to teach Luke the ways of the force, when he could just have lead the rebel alliance with his combative knowledge of fighting the clones???????? i need to get this answer
It would've compromised the positions of Bail Organa and Mon Mothma. Had Obi-Wan emerged as a leader in the emerging Rebel Alliance, the Empire would've taken the threat more seriously and crushed the Rebellion before it had gained any momentum.
Seeing as both Obi-Wan and Yoda were joint #1 on the most wanted list, it was all for the best that they went into hiding.
What you've said has some validity, but we are talking about a man who has not really used his Jedi skills since he tool Luke to tatooine, I mean other than talking to a force ghost, and learning new ways of the force, Ben was only getting older, and he was never a master, well in my eyes that is.
I do think that the others are right in saying that Luke should have all the same if not better abilities than his father. I do not know why they never talked about Padme and her what I believe to be Jedi senses. Now I know that is a stretch, but I think it was true.
On another note, I also think that Kenobi saw the footage and realized that the twins could together conquer the Sith, and defeat the empire.

Before Luke joined, the rebel alliance was very insignificant. The only thing that gave them an edge on the Empire was the Death Star plans, which happened just before Luke netered the equation. You have to also take into account that Palp and Vader are extremely arrogant and prideful. Nothing could stand up to their mastery of the force. And besides, they had the Death Star to boot. So, a rag-tag group of people and ships really did pose no threat until Luke came along.
But that's not the reason for this thread.
I agree with what had been said. Ben saw that the restoration of the Jedi Order was more important than the rebellion at that point in time. With a reorganized Jedi Order, they could prevent what had happened with the previous Order from ever happening again.

Explain how Luke helped in the destruction of the Death Star 2!
Please?

Distracting Palpatine and Vader so they didn't evacuate. Luke got off in time, there's no reason to think the Sith couldn't. The first Death Star also would have made it so the Empire could crush the Rebellion if not for Luke destroying it.

So Luke's role was "distraction"?
Even if Luke was not there, or had he been killed, or if he had to use the bathroom for awhile .... the Battle Of Endor (The Stalingrad of Star Wars) would have gone down the same way.

By RotJ his role was redeemer, but in terms of the battle it largely served as a distraction, yes. However, if not for Luke, Palpatine and Vader would have fled making it so the war would continue.

I guess we will agree to disagree about the two Sith escaping DS2 ....

but why? Luke escaped in time despite dragging a 2 meter half-incapacitated man in full armor through half the station AND having a tender moment for 2 or 3 minutes with him. Without Luke, what would keep the Sith from escaping well ahead of the DS' destruction?

Obi-Wan had been instructed to watch over Luke. At the right age, Obi-Wan had to teach Luke the ways of the Force so that the Jedi could reemerge. Plus, he was hiding so that he could watch over Luke without getting found and killed.
