They just refer to Hoth as the "Ice Planet Hoth" because it's the terrain of the planet. Just like "Forest Moon of Endor". It's completely snow and ice, just like Endor is mostly forest. It's not like Earth, they don't have the different land mases of land and snow, they have just ice. It just distinguishes it from other planets within the area, it's not like Planets have big signs that say HOTH, but you can see a pure white planet from miles and miles away.

They named it that so nobody would ever want to go there (like how the vikings named greenland and iceland), it was enough to throw off the imperial officers, but not enough to throw off vader

that or it was great to bring in the skiing and snowboarders and boost tourism

So that people with a lisp don't get the wrong idea about the type of planet it is?

Well, actually, GL fashioned the OT after those campy serials at the movies int he 40's like Flash Gordon. Ice Planet Hoth just sounds COOL!

I think the names "Ice Planet Hoth" and "Forest Moon of Endor" or done for our benefit so we can immediately picture it in our heads. So when the film goes there we know where we are.

By the way, I was hoping for "Nudist Moon of Endor".

There could be many planets named hoth in the galaxy, so "Ice Planet Hoth" refers to the ice covered planet.

(A) It's covered in snow and ice.

(B) It's a planet

(C)"They" named it Hoth to differentiate it
from other planets. There may even be other planets that are acovered in ice and snow.

(D) Hoth is where I get all my breeding stock.

(E) Taun Tauns only smell bad if you don't bathe them.

(F) You can actually go to school to become a Taun Taun groomer. I'm not a groomer, I just raise them for meat and hides. It's my niece who grooms them. She has a mobile Taun Taun grooming van that, well, it actually hovers like a landspeeder.

(G) Cool, eh?

to differentiate from the Jedi Lord Hoth who lived and died 1000 years earlier
"They're on Hoth, Lord Vader." - "Really? Set course for Ruusan, then. Ludicrous Speed!"
