The most noteworthy thing about Splinter of the Mind's Eye to me (besides the title, which I think is cool) is that it was proposed as the sequel to ANH had the first film done poorly; that's why Han Solo isn't present in the story, and the setting is a foggy planet which would presumably be easy to do as a set.
So, what if it had been made instead? How could the story have changed? I think that the most important thing is that Luke and Leia may not have been siblings, then.

but it's not Luke, it's Kenobi's ghost acting through Luke, so it doesn't really count!

yeah, let's just say I wouldn't be here now

Ah, but there might not be a ESB, depending on how well a hypothetical SotME does at the theaters. And if it does do well enough to merit a third installment in the trilogy, it may not look anything like ESB or ROTJ.

sick = the book is crap, I thought it was self explanatory, and not worth wasting time typing out an expalanation such as this.

I thought SOTME was the only EU book that came close to capturing the spirit of Star Wars. Of course its nothing near as great as ESB, but as a modestly budgeted follow-up to Star Wars I thought it worked quite well.

You got a nice bit of romantic tension between Luke and Leia going on, and she really brings back that butt-kicking Leia aspect from Star Wars, plus Luke fighting a cave spirit, a giant monster in the water, giant lizards chasing people and eating them, the heroes being captured, a climactic lightsaber battle with Vader, plus Ewoks-done-right in the form of the primitive aliens that Luke convinces to help overthrow the Empire. And its got all the stuff from Raiders of the Lost Ark like jungle booby-traps and a search for a lost idol. Filmed correctly, I can imagine it being pretty entertaining. Han Solo is sorely missed of course, but since Harrison Ford was a no-show at that point you can't really hold this against the film/book.

I thought the romantic tension between Luke and Leia was a positive of the book given that they didn't know they were related yet. It's weird in hindsight, but it's a natural progression from Star Wars.

Oh, they definitely wouldn't look anything like ESB or RotJ as Splinter was going to have a far lower budget. I think we wouldn't have Yoda and Luke and Leia wouldn't be siblings.

I've never read that book. I remember way back in the day when it came out. If it's possible can someone PLEASE post a few minor & major parts of the story?

Thanks!!!

That's why I'm glad he gave me Star Wars.
It always reminds me of my childhood.

If you didn't read the book back in 1978-79, then you are looking at it through the prism of ESB and maybe the other films as well. At the time, I thought it was a decent "EU" followup to Star Wars. Obviously, it follows a plot line much different from what actually transpired, so it offends a lot of people. It's not a "great" book by any means, but it wasn't intended as a part of the filmed GFFA.

Its a book I've always enjoyed, and the first time I read it, I had already seen ESB and ROTJ many times. Mostly, I agree with everything Zombie said.

Sooo.... if SotME had been made into a film, Luke and Leia wouldn't have been siblings and might have gotten together?

thinking grin

I'm not a huge fan of the whole quest for treasure theme - too much of a SW/Indy hybrid plot for my tastes - but it's interesting to think about in an AU sort of way.

I loved the book, but only because I can't not love a SW book. But the lightsaber fight between Luke and Vader, and then Vader's hand being cut off [the whole ROTJ scene wouldn't make sense] and Leia fighting Vader?!

Plus the old woman would be too much to handle in a movie... and what about Han and Chewie?!
