Wouldn't it make more sense if there were a three year gap, as was between the first 2 films(and in real time). Everyone in rotj looks visiblly older, and while I could believe Mark Hamill being a 2 yar old at that point, it takes a little imagination for him to be 23. Just a small anoyance, but worth bringing up, imho

Because that's the way the timeline is set up.

I was just thinking about this. I agree it's a bit of a stretch that only one year elapses while our heroes plan Han's rescue, Luke gains unseen powers. etc. There is nothing in the films to indicate precisely how much time goes by; thus it seems to me there's no reason why we cannot imagine that three, or five, or even ten years passes between episodes.

Except I can't really see them hanging around for 3 years while Han sits in Carbonite as Jabba's prisoner.

Luke: Were we going to do something this week?
Leia: I don't know. You're right, it seems like we're forgetting about something. Something kind of important.
Luke: Did you file your taxes?
Leia: Yeah, and I renewed the insurance on the Falcon... finger snap Han!
Luke: Head slap D'oh!

My understanding is that its only a few months between the two films.

Certainly the official timeline dictates it's only a year or less, but I take issue with this based on the obvious aging of the characters between films, on Luke's pronounced advancement in power and confidence, and on the idea (in my own imagination) that the search for Han was a long, arduous process -- only the tail end of which we see in the first act of ROTJ.

It isn't that the characters "forget" about Han -- clearly that would be ridiculous; it's that the infiltration of Jabba's Palace by Lando, the establishment of a bounty hunter identity by Leia, and the full fruition of Luke's Jedi skills require more time than the LFL-sanctioned "one year" timeline proposes.

Well, Boushh was an established bounty hunter before he had an "accident." Leia was simply using his armor.

And if you take the events of Shadows of the Empire (novel and comic) into account it also took Boba Fett awhile to get Han to Jabba due to interference from other hunters. There's basically his story, Luke's story, and Leia and Chewie's story all happening at the same time.

One year seems to me to be the max length of time. ESB ends with Lando and Chewie ostensibly on their way to "save Han." If stage one of the rescue plan was for Lando to infiltrate Jabba's crew (which couldn't take that long--Lando's basically just hired to be a thug it seems), then why would the others wait around for years on end before getting around to carrying out the rest of the plan?

If you're reconciling Mark Hamill looking more aged, just figure that the shock from Luke's confrontation with Vader and the soul-searching that must have followed affected his outward appearance in some subtle way.

Fair enough. I didn't mean that anyone else needed to share my fantasy. I've read SotE and I think there's some good stuff in there, but in my own mind it makes sense to stretch the story out and give it some room to breathe. As I said before, Luke and crew aren't simply 'waiting around' to rescue Han; they're dealing with whatever complications arise in the endeavor to track Boba Fett, find and replace Boushh, inflitrate Jabba's Palace, and develop stronger Jedi skills, which includes building a light saber -- a power Luke acquires neither from Kenobi nor from Yoda.

I think a three year gap would be more appropriate for Luke to complete his Jedi training as well as for the Rebel Alliance to grow to where it can challenge the Empire militarily. Then again there's the Han Solo thing, but that can probably be attributed to difficulty in locating him? I mean, when they created Jabba's criminal enterprise they didn't have to anchor him to Tatooine and give our heroes an easy target to strike.

Also, ESB feels much more like a direct sequel to ANH than ROTJ does to ESB. When the screen first pans down to the incomplete Death Star in that first scene, my first feeling is that a good deal of time has passed and that the Battles of Yavin and Hoth are ancient history. Given the amount of change that the galaxy has been through in the time since ANH and ESB I definitely think that a three or even five year gap is needed in between Episodes V and VI.

To me, I always thought it was two or three months and no more than that. I mean how long are they going to just sit around and let Han remain dead? The way ESB ended, with Lando basically seeing "see you real soon when we rescue Han", implied that ROTJ would pick up very shortly later, like right after they caught up with Boba Fett (ie a few weeks)-- a year is totally out there and unrealistic. I guess the EU has a different (inconsistent) interpretation compared to the film but the EU has always been a sort of parallel universe anyway.

According to the 1983 Mad Magazine edition of ROTJ it was 300 mornings; this is Leia commenting on Han's morning breath after having been frozen for so long without brushing.

And so is my imagination! grin I pay little heed to the EU: it's fun, but my own imagination is better (IMHO!). I've also got some nifty ideas for stories that take place between 'ANH' and ESB, which have little or nothing to do with official EU materials. (Such as Vader crash-landing on Yavin IV and wandering, his machinery sparking and life support systems close to shut-down, through the Massassi Temple complex, until he crosses paths with our heroes on their way out of the Awards ceremony....)

As to the thread's topic, once again, I'm not proposing that the heroes just "sit around and let Han remain dead" -- the timeline I'm imagining is teeming with wild adventures, victories and losses, chases and shoot-outs, and character development that leads to the heroes being who they are in ROTJ, which is somewhat different from who they are at the end of ESB.

The time till Han's rescue might have been a lot shorter, but IG-88 caught up with Boba Fett before he could deliver Han to Jabba. Boba's ship was damaged, and Tatooine didn't have the facilities needed to repair his ship, so he fled to Gall. Leia, Luke, Lando and Dash pursued Boba to Gall, but he escaped. Then they got caught up in Black Sun's schemes (where Leia conveniently acquired Boushh's suit) and the rest is history.
