In a ANH, when Han and Luke go to rescue Leia in the detention cell block, the Commander asks the question, "Where are you taking this...Thing?" Since thousands of Wookies were used to help construct the DS, why wouldn't he have known what Chewie was?

I always took that line to mean that he considered Wookies to be objects (the same attitude many slave owners held) rather than intelligent beings, plus a healthy dose of xenophobia, not that he didn't know what a wookie was.

Actually, the commander was asking this question to Chewie. See, the commander noticed how short Luke was for a Stormtrooper, so he automatically assumed he wasn't a human in that armor, hence the question. You ALL had it wrong for 30+ years!

I'm not speaking to anyone in this thread but in other threads I've posted there seems to be a running joke about how I put "possible spoilers" behind this thread title. I've been here long enough to know that revealing a spoiler can get you banned. I am probably one of the few people here who saw ANH when it originally premiered. It just said Star Wars. ANH was added later on dvd. I never read any SW books until 1991 and that was Heir to the Empire, and since then I've been hooked, but I swear I never knew the Empire had enslaved 20k Wookiees until just a couple of days ago while reading the new Death Star novel. That's when I got the idea for this thread. I was only trying to follow TOS in case others didn't know the fact about the Wookiee's enslavement.
Anyway, I think I deserve a little more credit and respect from those who would think their knowledge of SW is superior than mine.

Hey, warning about possible spoilers about a book that came out in November or so is just friendly. People do that in Lit after the spoiler-month all the time. But I think, just upon seeing the title, it's easy to see why bac thought you're warning us about CT-spoilers. 
And my comment was just meant to point that particular fact out, nothing else.  Though I don't even know where that is from originally... or how I know that o_O
