There was definitely some material about Wookiee (look, two e's!) slaves on the Death Star in the Thrawn Trilogy. I don't remember if there was anything earlier than that though...

I've been here long enough to know that revealing a spoiler can get you banned. I am probably one of the few people here who saw ANH when it originally premiered. It just said Star Wars. ANH was added later on dvd. I never read any SW books until 1991 and that was Heir to the Empire, and since then I've been hooked, but I swear I never knew the Empire had enslaved 20k Wookiees until just a couple of days ago while reading the new Death Star novel. That's when I got the idea for this thread. I was only trying to follow TOS in case others didn't know the fact about the Wookiee's enslavement.
Anyway, I think I deserve a little more credit and respect from those who would think their knowledge of SW is superior than mine.
ANH was added way before the DVD

Would make sense, seeing how part of it is set on Kashyyyk. Didn't the Basic-speaking Wookiee have something to do with it?

I don't remember the details, but I do remember that some back story was provided about their use on the Death Star.

Was it the wookiee enslavement or the Noghri enslavement that was talked about in TTT? Anyway, it's possible that the "...thing?" comment was based off of the fact that the wookiees were slaves that the time.

Well, okay, the Noghri thing is a plotline of the trilogy
the Wookiee thing is probably nothing more than a short paragraph/dialogue in HttE

Tying random loose threads together...is slaves were used to build the first death star, then were slaves used to build the second death star? Which gets back to the question in the Movie clerks about how sad it was to see the second death star destroyed because the working man took a hit....if you add that they were slaves doing the work then it is even worse
