Even after the Rebels destroyed the 1st DS, they had to run and hide again. So why did the Empire need the DS anyway?

They believed that the Death Star would create enough fear that no one would ever even consider rebelling. The Rebellion had to hide anyway, but destroying the Death Star put the Rebellion in a far better position than it would have been if the Empire was able to simply destroy wherever they hid.

The Death Star was the epitome of the Tarkin Doctrine: Rule through fear of force rather than force itself. The Death Star's presence would effectively quell any rebellions that might come up because the message was clear: behave yourselves or you'll be visited by the Death Star.

But the Empire believed wrong. It didnt work.

I think the Empire would have been better off spending the resources it did by instead making more clone armies to micro-manage the worlds instead of the DSs. I dont think Palpatine would have destroyed any world that was really useful to him. That would have been really stupid, and Palps wasnt stupid. If the rebels were on said world, the Empire would have to send in troops and equipment anyway.

What world wouldn't be afraid of a Battle Station that could destroy a world? But, the Star Destroyers were World Destroyers themselves. I can't remember what EU series it was, but I remember that the Star Destroyers were built for the purpose of dropping bombs on planets. I think it was in the Thrawn trilogy. Why didn't they just send in hundreds of Star Destroyers? It's not like they didn't have enough to begin with.

Well yeah, but that was their reason for building the DS. The fact that it didn't work is beside the point. tongue

But that is contradicted by Vader declaring that they shouldn't put much faith in it because it was useless compared to the power of the force. Why wouldn't Vader think it was great if its only purpose was to be used as a scare tactic? That makes me believe the Emperor had other plans - like making an example of several worlds. In my judgment, Vader saw it as ridiculous to destroy planets when the purpose was to rule them all. Just go down and use the force and wipe out the rebellious - then the planet can be filled with new citizens loyal to the Empire.

Vader saw that they were placing far too much faith in the power of a machine which could be destroyed. They planned to use it as they needed to show they were willing to use it against anyone who rebels if they planned to rule by fear.

Right, I agree again. But if that was the plan, why would Vader feel they were placing far too much faith in it? From Vader's point of view: So what it could be destroyed...while it lasted it would serve its purpose of frightening the pants off of everyone and they could use it to blow up a few planets to make sure everyone understood they meant business. Just another weapon - and seemingly right up Vader's alley.

I don't see his point in complaining if he was not saying that he felt it sub-par it because it would be better to overtake planets with the force than the toy planet-blower-upper. Unless he was just bragging about the power of the force.

They probably didn't need it for the actual war, especially seeing how they did just fine after its destruction (though then I'm sure the SSD helped). It was probably a lot more of a political tool with many practical uses - it wasn't a coincidence that Palpatine disbanded the Senate like the day before the DS went operational.
I don't see it as a means to quell rebellions as such but rather to scare ex-senators and planetary rulers into silence - in order to reduce rebellious tendencies.

Oh yeah and to crush the Rebellion in one swift stroke should they ever find their base. Which they did. If hadn't been for that meddling farmboy, you'd all be all like "wow, that thing is useful as hell! awesome!"
But that'd be ironic. Did they fear the Rebellion so much to build this ridiculously huge thing to put an end to them a few minutes faster than a "normal" orbital bombardment would have done? Well, probably. After all, all who gain power are afraid to lose it.

ISDs don't drop bombs on planets. They are mid-sized starships that are designed to support planetary invansions and carry out blockade actions. Having said that, however, a single Star Destroyer is capable sterilizing the surface of a planet with its turbolsers, which is referred to as a Base Delta Zero mission. The reason the Empire didn't just send a Star Detroyer to slag the surface of Alderaan probably has to do with the fact that Alderaan's deflector shield would have been able to withstand orbital bombarment from a single Star Destroyer. There's also the pyschological impact of reducing a planet to rubble with a single shot.

I think he basically was just bragging about the Force. He only got angry when they had the gall to claim it was the "ultimate power in the universe."

HAN: The entire starfleet couldn't destroy the whole planet. It'd take a thousand ships with more fire power than I've...

Let's be honest. Nobody really needs a DeathStar, but we all want a Deathstar.

Yea, and think of it's practical uses. Turn down the power and now you don't have to dig for days or weeks on a dead planet to the useful ores under the crust.
