Stephen King saw a rough cut of Star Wars??

I was watching the boxset DVD doco they other day, and GL said something that made me sit up and take notice. He said that he had a special preview of the unfinished film for a few friends, including Speilberg, DePalma and Stephen King! This is the first time I've ever heard it mentioned that Stephen King sat in of a rough cut viewing of Star Wars. This just struck me as a wonderful meeting of cultural icons. Does anyone have any further info on this, if it did in fact happen and is not just a figment of George's fuzzy memmory?
thanks
Simon

I knew about the others you mentioned, plus John Milius and Francis Coppola -- but, no, I never knew that Stephen King was among those Lucas considered his close, inside friends and fellow filmmakers. As far as I knew, King has always lived in Maine and in 1976 had only just been introduced to Hollywood as a result of his first novel, Carrie, being made into a film by dePalma.

Maybe depalma dragged him along. King does reference SW and ANH in particular in his books on an irregular basis-lightsabres were in the fifth dark tower novel, for example.

yes that's what I was thinking, that DePalma was filming Carrie at the time & they were working closely together. However I have never heard any other mention of this.

well, there is a story that auditions for Carrie and Star Wars were held simultaneously, that Sissy was up to play Princess Leia while Carrie Fisher was set to be Carrie. Fisher, though, disapproved of Carrie's nudity, they swapped roles.

Pfft, as often as selfless, heroic people win in King books, he's anything but a Sith.

It is true that the casting sessions for both Star Wars and Carrie were held at the same time. IIRC Sissy was in about the third or fourth choice group for Star Wars but it would have need soemone from each of the other groups to say no for her to have got the job . the Second choices for each of the main roles in Star Wars were totally different so if say Harrison had said no then niether Carrie and Mark wouldn't have got the job . As for Carrie been up for the Carrie role that's first that i have heard but it's not impossible

Thank GOD it wasn't Sissy Spaceck. don't get me wrong, she's a great actress, just not at all right for Star Wars/Leia. She's too spooky. and Vice Versa, Carrie Fisher is too angelic to play a haunted character like Stephen King's Carrie.

That meeting is mentioned in Empire magazine ( Vader cover, before the release of ROTS ). I will look it up again.

I wonder what improvements to the movie were suggested by Steven King.
It needs more zombies George.

too spooky? eh? - only in "Carrie". See her in the Loretta Lynn story and see how very unspooky she is !

I've only seen her in Carrie, so I've got to agree with Luke_SW. That would've just been a bit too creepy.
Then again I'm looking at it from a POV of having seen her in Carrie so what do I know?
