What's odd is I don't really remember the film that well. I was only 9 and didn't really have that great of a memory as a child I guess. I remember thinking the Jawas were awesome and immediately begging my mom for a lightsaber. But I wasn't able to grasp the scope of the film until a few years later watching the VHS tapes. But still, I thought it was a good experience for a kid. I know I'll show my kids the films.

I was a freshman in High School when ANH first came around. I had to beg my mom to get an early dismissal to see the first screening at our local theater. Most of the new stuff wasn't too surprising to me because I had seen the billions of tv specials about the re-release beforehand. Like most people I groaned at Han shooting first. The part that really made me smile was the Death Star dogfight because I had not actually seen most of the remade action sequences. That alone was enough to make me smile! Eventually I got around to seeing ESB which was cool except when Luke was plummeting to the bottom of cloud city...that yell made cringe quite a bit (thankfully that was taken out in the 2004 DVD release). I didn't actually see the rerelease of ROTJ mainly because its my least favorite and the new stuff they added was just lame. Watching the "Jedi Rocks" scene is just embarassing. Overall though it was a landmark event for someone who was born just a lil too late to see the originals in the theater.

Yeah, guess I should start in '95:

Since the one last time release was both individually and in a box set, I ended up getting ANH for Christmas that year. I was surprised to see an interview with Leonard Maltin at the front of the tape.

Cut to November of '96. I was in the sixth grade. It's opening night for Star Trek: First Contact (I was really into Star Trek at the time). I go to see that by myself while my mother and sister go to see Jingle All The Way. We meet up afterwards. My mom mentioned that she saw a preview before the movie stating something along the lines of "starting New Year's Day, the Star Wars movies will be re-released in theaters."

My reaction wasn't one of shock, I was actually just kind of confused. I can't remember if she mentioned that there were going to be changes, she might've. In any event, I knew about it by the time I started seeing the commercial with the Death Star Praxis explosion and the audience silhouette cheering.

ANH I actually don't remember all that well, probably because I was in a different world for those two hours and change. Empire I do remember. Jedi I'll never forget for the unbelievably LOUD sound Luke's lightsaber activating and de-activating made during the "I see you have constructed a new lightsaber, your skills are complete" scene. I also remember being sent out of the theater with a nice, epic feeling from the new celebration music.

Looking back on it, I think I realized pretty much as soon as the movies hit theaters that this would be the version from now on. Of course, it didn't matter back in the pre-dvd days, but that's another story.

It was kind of hammered home when the TPM teaser aired in November of '98 and it had that same sparkly LFL logo from the SE.

By the way, I eventually acquired the full '95 vhs set and I was surprised to see that Lucas openly admits that he was in the process of altering the movies and even talks about the PT!
