Do the Jawas give extended warranties ?

Ive always found it odd the way Uncle Owen bought the droids from the Jawas. Sure, he asked 3CPO questions, but when it came to picking the R2 unit, it seemed like he was more interested in the shininess and color than in the reliability of the mechanics. (And he made Luke clean them up even more, like they were some kind of a show cars. But they were going to be used on a desert moisture farm and would be dirty the next day anyway.) With what seemed like a pricey purchase for him, he didnt even "test drive" the droids, which I find strange.
So do you think he had some kind of money back arrangement with the Jawas ?
It didnt sound like it with this remark "Hey, what are you trying to push on us ?" when the red r2 unit started pouring smoke.

I think the Jawas have a buy "as is" policy, unless you've dealt with them for a good while, then they may be flexible.

Agreed. Jawas don't sell high-class material, they sell junk - like Watto does. Owen was lucky to find anything of sufficient use.

Jawas generally sell things as is. Had the R5 unit (Skippy the Jedi droid, lol) broken down after the transaction was completed, and the Jawas moved on, there wouldn't have been anything Owen could have done about it. The Jawas just had the misfortune of the droid crapping out right there and then. Car wasn't even off the lot yet, as you might say. They had no choice but to replace it with R2.

The comment 'what are you trying to push on us?' is like saying 'what kinda business are you running here?' Word of mouth travels, and eventually the poor little Jawas would go out of business.
I wonder if Tatooine, or the Republic/ Empire has a welfare plan?

There was a rumor that Owen called the better business bureau on them, but the stormtroopers killed them before the local BBB agent could get out to talk to the Jawas.

there wouldn't have been anything Owen could have done about it.
But maybe Jabba the Hutt functions like a mafioso BBB on Tatooine ?

settle this.

Either way, Owen doesnt really check the mechandise hes buying carefully, which since hes not loaded with droids, makes it an important purchase for him. Thats the odd part. He should have "kicked the tires" a little.

However, since we know that Owen is tight with his money, and since he did buy the droids without even "kicking thier tires," maybe the jawas do normally carry high quaility merchendise. And if they normally just carry junk, do you really think Beru would have told Luke to remind Owen to get a droid that speaks Bocce, instead of telling Luke to tell Owen not to waste thier hard-earned credits with the jawas?

Good point.
Surely there should have been some quality droid dealers in Mos Eisley or Anchorhead. The Jawas would have to compete with those.

I think they go by the "As Is" factor as well.
They deal with alot of stolen goods so they probably want to get the merchandise off their hands before someone goes looking or asking questions

The homestead is on the outskirts of town. Owen had to make a decision in that case: go to the city and find decent droids (although they might not be reliable) or deal with Jawas that come straight to your doorstep? Takes travel time out of the equation.
