Queengodess posted: If you allow me to drag a piece of EU into this thread... According to the Rise and Fall of Darth Vader your consciousness doesn't fade away directly after death. After dying Anakin finds himself floating (sort of... you know, without a body) around in a big black nothing, then Obi-Wan appears as a bright light and offers to teach him the technique before "consciousness fades".
That just doesn't make any sense. He is the Chosen One, it would be perfectly logical that he is able to do something like that on his own - he needed not the help of Yoda.
EU disapoints me this time.

Lucas' position on the involvement of Yoda/Obi-Wan has been consistent.

Maybe Anakin would have figured it out on his own like Qui-Gon did, eventually, but Obi and Yoda saved him the trouble. Anakin proved himself 10x's over when he killed Sidious, so his power as a Jedi is not in question. But I think it is way cool that Obi and Yoda helped him because of what it shows. I mean Anakin did kill Obi-Wan and Obi-Wan did maim Anakin, so you know, it showed that all of that was water under the bridge and what Obi really wanted was to spend eternity with his best mate, now that he was back. And Yoda and Anakin had their issues as well which were washed away by the knowledge that he too wished Anakin to join him and whoever else they had up there forever. Cool stuff.

This is true. It's never really said that one needs to be a ghost to go to a better place in the Force. Still, I'd like to know where Lucas said that. To me, it takes away some of Anakin's potential, because he IS the Force incarnate, but you point out a fact that Anakin may have learned on his own because of his power.
Or maybe it's just that he was forgiven by Obi-Wan and Yoda.

According to expanded universe, not all powerful Jedi decide to become one with the Force. Mara took a long time to do it, and the Jedi thought she would never return as a Force ghost.
Now that I think of it, it's quite strange. Post-Empire Jedi seem to know how to do it, but Obi-Wan never taught Luke.

Post ROTJ EU is made of fail, as is most of the EU during the clone wars.

That was intentional on Mara's part.

what evidence is there that Luke wasn't taught the technique? We only see what, 20 minutes of Luke's entire training on Dagobah, something that had to take at the very least a few months, while the Falcon was slowly making its way to Cloud City without its hyperdrive? For all we know Yoda taught it to him. He knew the technique. For that matter, why couldn't Kenobi's ghost have appeared to him and taught it to him? Luke received a lot of training we don't see in the films, its entirely plausible that this was one of those things learned "off-camera".

The ROTS novel.

Two things:
1) You don't know that Qui-Gon "figured it out on his own". He may have learned from the Shaman of the Whills.
2) Figuring it out AFTER DYING doesn't work.

By his own choice, though. Sure Palpatine made a hell of a sales pitch in ROTS, but the decision still was Anakin's.

ROTS? I thought you meant Lucas said Yoda and Obi-Wan TAUGHT it to Anakin, I remember that quote now.
As for the Shaman of the Whills, that's part of the EU, which Lucas has small say over. He could have figured it out on the other side, Lucas' words in the AOTC commentary seem to suggest something like that. Besides, Anakin is the Chosen One, born from the Force itself. He should be able to do more than just what normal people and Jedi can.

Agreed, even if I gobble it up non stop and love some of it. Besides, what happened to Mara the mute Force-Ghost? Did she learn from someone who didn't quite understand how it was done?
Anyway, even if one normally has to be taught, Anakin was special and especially powerful with a connection to the Force no one else had, so I see it as feasible he could have figured it out on his own eventually, after death, while sitting in the black void. But as I said, it was super kick that Obi-Wan and Yoda came to fetch him becuase of what that signifies.

I never said that it wasn't his choice. Anakin knew what he was doing was wrong and chose to "sell his soul" anyways.
