I know ANH came out first and not much thought was given into the fighting, but I'm sure the EU came up with reasons as to why this is the case. In the duel between Kenobi and Vader is the former still using Form III because he seems to be more on the offensive. Did he switch to something else like II or something during his time in exile?

might work better in an EU forum.

just so you know, a lot of thought was given to the fight in ANH.

It is a Samurai style fight, using 2 handed weapons that are hard to control and it's a pretty darn well done fight in that style.

I know squat about these forms you speak of, they do not exist in the films, don't believe me find a mention of one.

I greatly prefer all OT fights to the ridiculous and over the top fencing foil type fights of the PT, the PT fights simply jumped the shark.

Not all the PT duels were bad. The Darth Maul ones were good, as were Obi-Wan versus Dooku in AOTC. The Dooku rematch was really cool and I actually liked Mace vs Sidious, but Obi-Wan versus Grievous and the Mustafar one were pretty over the top.

The lightsabre duels were originally to be based on kendo weren't they? Heavy, double hand held swords, limited movements with decisive strikes, rather than the acrobatic, video game style duels we see in the PT. All the explanations about old men and machines limiting the movements were afterthoughts when the more spectacular style was favoured.

The description of form III from the original 2002 Insider article about lightsaber combat always struck me as being based on the Episode IV fight, and if I remember correctly, even included a picture of Obi-Wan from that particular showdown as a reference.
I'd say Kenobi was still using form III by the time of ANH, and any apparent discrepancies in style can be attributed to trying to shoehorn a style of combat based on a single line of text from a reference book into the already existing fights.

I liked all the lightsaber duels; I thought they were the highlights of all 6 movies. It was way cool in the OT because they were different and unique used that way. By the time the PT came out, millions all over had played with them at home, so they had to do some pretty heavy duty stuff. It was great to me, I loved Mustafar and Dooku v. Anakin/Obi-Wan alot, the grievous was great too. And Sidious' flying twirl was awesome. But back when I saw the OT, those duels were also very good and the use of the sabers in general was so wild it was great.

Something you might not know about this duel: Obi-Wan was meant to live

GL originally had OPbi-Wan survivied, albeit wounded when his wife Marcia pointed out that poor old Ben would just be a passenger while Han and Luke get to blow stuff up.

Was it Marcia that suggested it? I'd always heard Alec Guinness was the one who brought it up. Either way, it's interesting to imagine what would have happened if Obi-Wan hadn't died.

I don't know if it was Marcia or George, but it certainly wasn't Guiness, because (by Lucas' account) the actor was very disappointed on hearing the news of his character's demise. Lucas had to convince him that it was right for the movie before Guiness agreed to it.
