A friend of mine, new to SW asked me, " What do you think would've happened to Luke if he hadn't taken his weapons in the cave on Dagobah." It's not something I'd ever thought about b4 so I though I'd ask you guys and see what you think.

In my opinion, nothing would have happened. BTW, what exactly are you specifying by saying weapons? Do you mean his blaster, or his lightsaber? Yoda told him to not take his weapons, but he still took his lightsaber. Luke was fighting his fear in the cave, not Vader. Without his weapons, he wouldn't have figured out his "destiny", which we be becoming just like Vader.

Luke went in with feelings of aggression, and the cave magnified that and sent him back a vision of Vader and showed him what would happen if he allowed that aggression to continue.

That's what I was trying to get across (in case my response was unclear). Luke wasn't actually fighting Vader in the cave; that was a vision of what was to come if Luke gave in to the Dark Side.

Maybe by not taking weapons it would mean that luke was mature and ready for the burden of vader being his father and him seeing that in the cave.

Probably.

In one of those OT infinity comics, Luke went back into the cave after maturing a bit and the cave showed him pretty much everything.

"What's in there?"
"What you take with you. Leave your weapons, you will not need them."

This answers it all. If Luke went into the cave with the force as his only "weapon" nothing would've happened. It was purely a test of where he was in his training. Luke bringing his lightsaber in symbolizes his dependency on technologic weapons instead of just relying on the force. "What you take with you"- Luke not only took in his lightsaber and blaster, but his fear.

I always thought that if Luke hadn't have taken his weapons, he would have seen Anakin Skywalker instead? But I think it has to do with what we all think he took with him. Personally, I think he took not only his fear, but his arrogance. "What does the hermit know? I can take my weapons were I please!" Thus, vision-Vader challenged that arrogance.

Even after that, I don't think Luke quite learned his lesson till ROTJ. In the cave, Luke sure took his sweet time eying off Vader, which gave the Sith the advantage, Luke was on the back-foot. I don't think he wanted to make that mistake again, hence, he charged into the affair at Bespin rather quickly. But another interesting note is this... If you remember at Bespin, Vader allowed Luke the luxury to strike first, and whats the #1 Jedi rule regarding hand-to-hand? Let your opponent make the first move. wink

They weren't fighting hand to hand, it was blade to blade. And the whole letting your opponent make the first move isn't really a rule per se. happy

Especially considering Darth Vader was the image of evil, and an enemy to the Jedi. If Luke hadn't drawn his weapon at Vader on Bespin, I doubt they'd sit down and have a tea party. Vader probably would've struck at him first deeming him weak.

Lol, well, not exactly hand-to-hand, rumsmuggler, but my brother does martial arts and with weapons, they call it hand-to-hand, its become a habit of mine to do the same. blush And no, you're right, not a underlined rule, but a trait of the Jedi to assess their opponents first off, I always though, that if Vader truly was threatened by Luke, he'd have killed him in blind rage as the true Sith would, but, we do know that he's not stupid, and that he was looking to knock Palpatine off his throne anyway.

Battlefront has that cave and you can hear, but not see, Vader. Might that be significant? I'll see what the novel says.

Gotcha. I've done my fair share of martial arts and sword training. I've always called weapons fighting melee combat, and non weapon combat hand to hand. It's no big deal though. happy
