As to answer the initial question of the thread, another poster already said this but it's just a reason to give the main characters a means of command. Lando was already made a general too and Han had a longer standing relationship with the Rebellion.

Commander and Lt.Colonel are equal ranks so that works for me.

Okay long story short, GFFA ranks make no sense at all, although I tried to make sense of them. And failed.
Its quite easy, the promotion goes like this : Captain > Scruffy-looking nerf-herder > Scoundrel > Sleemo > General > Bantha poodoo

If we consider the cruisers to be the Navy, and the fighters to be the Air Force, than that could be the reason why Ackbar holds the rank of Admiral, and Lando is a General.

Lando explained hwo he got promoted after he left Cloud City. But what about Han?
He was encased in carbonite for a year and was a captain during the Battle of Hoth.

He must have had the qualities and natural leading ability to become a general. Also, the Rebellion was desperate for high-ranking officers, so they chose who they thought would be a good fit for the position.

Possibly. It could be that they didnt have a good amount of troops. The opening crawl does say that the Rebels are now a small band struggling against the Empire. The are probably outnumbered and Han is a good choice. Maybe Leia had something to do with him being promoted.

In the ESB novelization I believe there is a part where General Reeikan (sp?) is thinking that he would have offered Han an officer's rank. So obviously Han was thought of highly by the commanding officers. He had been with the Alliance for 3 years by ESB and I'm sure he proved himself worthy.

Again, a promotion from Captain to General is only ONE rank. Thus Han comes out of the carbonite and the Alliance promotes him to general. No biggie. Probably out of desperation or out of respect/acknowledgement of what he had done for them.

That's a pretty inaccurate view of the rebellion, and their technology as a whole. The X, A, and B wings were all state of the art starfighters, the Mon Cal captial ships were in good shape and the rebels stole bought and acquired ships and tech as every chance they got. By the time of ROTJ, the rebel alliance had many supporters other than the smugglers idealists and whisperers than you mentioned. Many people joined up to be soldiers pilots, etc.. Also many imperials that saw the Empire for what it truly was defected and joined the rebellion.
