Would've made the start of ROTJ quite different wouldn't it?

I can just see the crawl now...

Having accidentally killed Han, Princess Leia turned her mind to the second Death Star...

Think of all those Jabba's Palace action figures who wouldn't have been created.

The blasters they were firing aren't strong enough to cause any real damage to Fett's ship. They were shooting out of anger and frustration.

It appears, based upon the radio dramatization, that Leia and Chewie initially believed that they could damage it enough to force Slave I to land-
LANDO: That's it! That's Boba Fett's ship! Han must be aboard!

LEIA: We can't let it blast off! Chewie, open fire on it!

LANDO: It's useless, Leia...

LEIA: Chewie! Aim for the lifters!

However, the fact that it had its shields up meant prevented them from doing any damage.
THREEPIO: Your Highness ... the ship has its deflectors up.

CHEWBACCA: HOOTS.

LANDO: Forget it, Leia. But if we move fast, we might be able to catch them. My people repaired the Falcon. Let's go.

But what if it did? Slave I is roaring away from the east platform while Leia and Chewie fire away. Suddenly, one of their blaster bolts strikes a delicate piece of apparatus and smoke begins billowing from the blast site. As Slave I drops like a rock into the orange clouds of Bespin, the roar of its engines becoming inaudbile, Leia and Chewie stare off in stunned silence. Idiots.

The RD also gives the impression that Leia would rather Han be dead than frozen in carbonite for the rest of his existence-
LANDO: He's alive! The sensors indicate that he's in perfect hibernation.

CHEWBACCA: ROARS.

THREEPIO: Thank the Maker! Oh, no, calm down, Chewbacca! Don't forget, if you initiate more violence, you'll involve others as well as yourself!

LEIA: Threepio's right, Chewie. It's too late for that now.

THREEPIO: But, Your Highness, Captain Solo will be all right, won't he?

LEIA: He's trapped inside that thing forever unless someone releases him. I think I would almost prefer that he'd died.

And even if she wasn't, the Ugnaught Surface might've been there to catch Slave I -- provided Fett was capable of handling such an emergency.

I haven't got around to the radio drama for ESB. I have it, but haven't gotten around to listening to it.

It was a futile attempt. A more violent way of saying "F*&% YOU BOBA FETT!"

No I definitely think that the idea is that they could probably cripple Slave I and force him to land. Granted the chances of doing so are extremely slim even if you happened to be a Jedi....but then what else are you going to do once you've gotten that far?

It's like trying to shoot a hand gun or small rifle at a heavily armored fighter plane. You might get lucky and cause a bit of damage, but odds are that nothing is going to happen, the jet flies away, and you're just wasting ammo.

A similar thing happens in AOTC when Padme and the clones start firing on Dooku's escaping ship. I don't know if it was intended to be similar or not. But, I would say that they were desperate shots made in frustration. I don't think thay Leia and the other were thinking clearly. Having them run out onto the landing platform in time to see Boba's ship taking off, only to say, "well, there goes that idea," it just doesn't have as much of an emotional impact.

Well, I believe that it was firing in the hopes of making the ship land. They should be smart enough to know that the ship won't be hit, but that maybe they could get lucky and hit it with a shot. However, it also looks like they were trying to give an effort towards crippling the ship.
