Fighter Squadrons

I just watched RotJ again, and I noticed that during the Battle of Endor, there were several Rebel fighter squadrons. Now, this got me thinking; why were there so many squadrons? They seemed to be going after the same objective (unlike ANH, where Red Squadron provided cover for Gold Squadron), and the number of fighters made every squadron consist of 4-5 fighters each. In that case, why couldn't they consolidate the pilots and put them in 2 or 3 squadrons instead of 4-5? Were the groups determined by type of ship or randomly?

Let me start off by referring you to the wookiepedia entry on the Battle of Endor, where under the "Fleet" heading there is a complete list of all of the mentioned (and unmentioned) fighters. According to the entry, there are 500+ fighters.
To address your first question, asking why they should split up even if they are attacking the same target, is still a valid question. Having these squadrons makes it easier to organize the fighters so that they might attack the same objective but from different angles. Plus, when another target opens up (like the Death Star), it was easier for Lando to organize a measured response on the new objective while having other fighters remain engaged ("Red group, Gold group all fighters follow me").
To address your second question, the organization of fighter classes were half-organized and half random among the fighter groups. As wookiepedia notes, though Blue was entirely B-Wing, Green entirely A-Wing and Gray entirely Y-Wing, Red was part X-wing and part A-wing while Gold was part X-wing and Y-wing (plus Lando). I especially noticed the Red squadron differentiation when Wedge was talking to Red 2 and Red 3, one (or both) of which were not X-wings.

What Im aware of is that after the Battle of Yavin. Luke disband the Red squadron and established, along with Wedge, Rouge Squadron.
Red Squadron which were commonly X-wing fighters reappeared in 4 ABY (Endor).
Gold Squadron were Y-wings and the Millennium Falcon (YT-1300)
Green Squadron were the B-Wings and A-wing

B-wings were in Blue Squadron, actually. And the Y-wings at Endor were in Gray Squadron.

My point was that some of the fighters seemed a little out of place. If the squadrons were specific type of fighters, then why did it seem like the groups consisted of different fighter types? If you're looking for ship conformity, the movie didn't have it.

What is the source for Gold Group (or squadron) being a mix of different fighters? I don't remember seeing that mentioned anywhere.

It still eases the command structure of the fleet. With squadron leaders responsible for fewer ships under their command, rather than having a squadron leader in command of 250 ships. More squadrons consisting of fewer fighters allows for more flexibility.

To me I think it's a good idea to have some of your fighters mixed. Each fighter has different attributes which could make for a better attack.
