I've watched both the theatrical version and the 2004 version of the entire Classic Star Wars Trilogy and I have found that my mindset is different when watching either versions. I was born in 1986 so I missed the theatrical releases of the original classic trilogy, but I did see the 1997 Special Edition Trilogy. But when I watch the original theatrical releases of the trilogy on DVD I don't think about the prequels at all. I think of it as the way people thought about them in 1977, 1980 and 1983. The story of Luke Skywalker and his struggle against the evil Darth Vader and his master, the evil Emperor of the Galaxy. But when I'm watching the 2004 DVD versions, I think about Anakin Skyalker and his journey from slave to Jedi to Dark Lord of the Sith. Does anyone else feel that way when they watch both of those versions?

Thats probably because the DVD versions were altered to better flow with the Prequels. The whole "Son of Skywalker" and Hayden as Force Ghost Anakin makes it a Saga instead of two trilogies.
I agree, when I watch the '97 compared to the DVD, they seem almost like different movies.

Yeah, I agree somewhat. If nothing else, I think it's hard not to think about the prequels when watching the DVD releases even if one normally doesn't when watching the older releases because of the changes made.

But don't you only notice it halfway through ESB ("son of Anakin Skywalker") and then just again at the end of RotJ? What else was prequelfied? Tatooine, the Death Star Battle, Cloud City and the Victory Celebration were 90ified, but that's not necessarily prequel.

Even the talk in Ben's hut about the Jedi and Luke's father being "killed". Sir Alec did a great job acting that and Lucas did a good job writing it, because even before the PT you could imagine what he was talking about. Now after the PT, it is connected and when listening to that speech you can't help but think about Anakin to Vader and the Mustafar duel etc etc.
I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, it's what Lucas wanted.

Oh, I definitely do this. If I want to re-live my childhood, so to speak, and think about the OT in terms of the mindset of the times they were released in, I watch the O-OT discs; if I want multi-layered, PT-linked Saga of Anakin Skywalker stuff, I watch the '04 DVDs. Both are enjoyable in their own way, but nostalgia is a powerful ally and I decidedly prefer the original versions (except the celebration ending of ROTJ, which I think is superior in the SE version, but that's another thread topic, I think).

The only moment that really stands out to me is Hayden being Anakin at the end of ROTJ. At first, I supported the change, but as time has gone on, I really don't like it at all. Beyond that, I notice the other changes, but none of them really change my viewing of the films in any way.

I think I might be the only person who doesn't like the extended dialogue in the DVD ESB. I personally thought it sounded alot better in the originals/SE '97.

I'm somewhat indifferent about that change. It isn't one that I really even notice when I watch the films.

I miss my old old old version of TESB that my mom had recorded from me. I was a lil lad in my high chair and I remember that everytime Luke got onto his X-Wing to see if Atroo was okay in the swamp a random Burger King commercial would pop up of some old guy talking about BK and then it would go back to the movie because she had taped and edited it off of TV.
No really though I agree with that most definitely. I do feel that theatrical editions are the most OT you can get obviously. The Special Edition takes me back to when I was ten and it was Star Wars with some new scenes. The DVD versions do make me feel that they are more connected to the PT.

My first version of ANH was like that. It sucked because my VCR would rewind like six ticks on the counter when you pushed pause, so you had to time it just right. Later, I saw a pic of Vader, Leia and a gaurd walking in the hall leading to the room where the "foul stench" scene took place and wondered if it was a promo shot. Then there was the tail end of a news promo: "... tonight at 10".
One thing that sticks out was my friend had a copy from the mid 80's, and during the scene where R2 is showing the maps of where to disable the tractor beam, 3PO had dialogue. Mine didn't, and my '95 box set didn't have it, IIRC. It didn't appear back until the SE.

If the PT came first (TPM 1977; AOTC 1980; ROTS 1983) and the OT came next (ANH 1999; TESB 2002; ROTJ 2005) then no one would have a problem with the extended dialogue in TESB (2002). It makes both trilogies flow much better with each other.
