For all we know Bush is secretly the next Palpatine and he allows this image of him to be portrayed as an 'American Idiot' or something when there actually will be no new President because he will become Emperor Bush.

It all really is from a certain point of view though on a more serious note. There are ways to do things and we'll never know if it these ways are truly what we are supposed to do. This to me would apply to things like how you were raised, culture, or religion.

Then there is right or wrong and that applies to anything. These can applied as easily as creating a life or taking a life. I don't care who or what you are but if you manipulate and control people and enforce it even more so with violence that is not a life you should have to live. Then again maybe I am wrong. Maybe it's all about what you yourself consider right or wrong. People over here can't understand customs in the Middle East nor they ours (I mean this mostly with the women). Yet it's all about how we were raised and what our beliefs are. Some people hold to these while others hold to others and thats fine...until one time these seperate beliefs collide.

Sorry I was bouncing everywhere, to more specifically answer your question Jay, we can never know if anything in our history books is ever justified. Furthermore how much has history been altered. All we can do is base it on what we see and know via our 'sources' in the media. That may all be the truth. It may not. I don't think it was that justified but they were able to do so so who am I but a geek on a website?

If I were the president I would have worried more about improving things in our own home before we went out and tried to makeover someone else's house. Maybe it's not that easy. I understand because I am a dad and my kids are like the people I have to please. But there is only so much that can be done. One wants his own room because he is older, can't do that because no cash flow for that. The other thinks he should have a DS too, he's too irresponsible. We need to maintain food and bills in the house. The older one wants to do band but he's already doing karate. Ideally to make everyone happy would be to have more at their disposal but everything comes with a price tag and so I feel that the U.S. is like me. They need to make more cash and keep everything going and so far they haven't made much progress. That I can sympathize with. However I think our own country needed help before we went and invaded someone else.

I don't see how any of that contradicts the Empire being evil though. Good people can certainly fall under its sway due to its promises to bring order, but the Empire violates multiple liberties which are inalienable for all sentient beings.



Well there was more to it than that. I just brought up the one part with the two lovers because that's the interest point for the story and that would help jog a memory.

I wouldn't say it was justified but, I'd also say it's a flawed comparison. The Rebellion wasn't a foreign power invading the Empire, but rather an insurrection fighting for freedom, democracy, etc. I would say that an insurrection in Saddam's Iraq who was fighting for those ideals and used the tactics of the Rebels could be justified, but that wasn't us.

Basically, if we're to apply this to Star Wars, it means that because the Empire is evil then it needs to be overthrown regardless of whether it is a legal government or not. Attacks by Islamic militants are carried out against governments that have not been proven to be evil. The fact that they intentionally target civilians as a means of intimidation further classifies them as terrorists and not as freedom fighters.

It's the fine line between "insurgent" and "terrorist".

I'm sure the French, Dutch, Polish, and Yugoslavian insurgents were all considered terrorists by Nazi Germany. tongue

Empire: Captures the princess.

Rebellion: Rescues the princess.

How does al Queda justify it's attacks against the multinational forces in Iraq? Every political/military/paramilitary organization has it's share of supporters and sympathizers based simply on perception.

Easy. How can the Seperatist movement justify their various attacks on the Republic? They are both rebel groups, who are trying to take down the government. However, they are both backed by numerous Senators who represent planets within the Galatic Senate [well up until ANH, when they disbanded the Senate] so in both defenses, they see the corruption within the current government and are aiming to rebuild it for whats good for the entire universe. But, we see in the OT that the Alliance are not granted the freedoms the Seperatists and the Trade Federation were given in the PT. The alliance were viewed as traitors, commiting treason just by keeping the order alive. We see that in Darth Vader's quote "You are part of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor."

Sometimes various figures had to be taken care of with by force, but only those who would not back down. Most of the higher ups in the Imperial Army or Government were completely corrupt. We see in the EU, like the novel Alliance, that some of the stormtroopers do not realize the ultimate corruption, and believe in the cause of the Empire- unification, justice, prosperity. But those who are corrupt are not only corrupt with greed but with power. They refuse to back down, to accept the wrong doings they have done to various worlds and species and believe they are invincible. Only then do the Rebels do what must be done.

Exactly. Once the Empire blew up a whole planet of innocent people, it all became fair game.

On-screen in the original film, the Empire commits acts of atrocity against unarmed civilians, fraudulently blames others for their own murderous actions, employs torture as an unchallenged means of interrogation, and destroys an entire planet which has no weapons.

These acts alone fully justify armed opposition, apart from any similar atrocities which warranted the designation "evil" in the opening scroll.

Except we never see them do anything to inspire fear in the Imperial populace. They're revolutionaries, not terrorists.

Edit: And of course, the Empire engages in state sponsored terrorism via the Destruction of Alderaan.
