Regardless of how disappointed you were with episodes 1-3, you can't really make such a statement, considering the amount of people that actually love them. Technically speaking, the films themselves are arguably even better than the OT.

Visual continuity took a back seat to effects, in my opinion. The OT universe looked lived in and real. Although the PT took place years before the OT, it shouldn't have looked fresh-from-the-factory new. That's one of many incongruities between the movies.
