ROTJ had several characters shine their best.

Leia, Wedge, Lando, Luke.

Solo didn't shine, but he was hampered by having to be blind in the beginning. But Solo fans still got good stuff out of him like when he's busting Luke's balls about the convienance of dying where he grew up, being defiant on the skiff to Jabba, etc.

It was my fave when I grew up in the 1980s. These days I prefer Empire and Sith, but rewatching the OT after the PT's completion is interesting: Jedi is the film of the OT that definitely draws strength from the PT, like Lucas said it probably would. The PT lends an air of real desperation and tragedy to scenes like Yoda's death and the Throne Room confrontation that wasn't as intense in the old days. A little surprising, but true for me.

I liked it enough...Space battle was excellent, although I think the Executor crash could be done WAAAY better, but that's a discussion for another thread...

I do think much more could have been done with this one, it had the makings of an epic ending to the saga-even more epic than it was...but IMO, it does fine the way it is.

I just don't like the Ewoks-I think that's the ONLY thing keeping me from saying ROTJ is my favorite of IV-VI...

Well, this probably is my favorite OT film, although it definitely could've benefitted from being made after the advent of CGI; some of the things Lucas wanted to do with this movie are just amazing to read about, and just were not possible at the time, unfortunately.

And I wish that the sanctuary moon was Coruscant's moon, like in the older drafts of the ROTJ script. That would just be awesome, as well as giving ROTJ a definite "Yes, the Rebels won and the war ended in it" statement.

I enjoy most of it. The Vader/Luke/Emperor stuff is obviously awesome. I like the spaceship battles during the rebels attack as well with Lando and Wedge at the helm. Great stuff there!

The Jabba scenes in the beginning are getting a little tedious as I watch this film more and more. I dunno... Jabba just doesnt interest me that much. The Ewoks, while starting out cool and mysterious end up being a little too cute for my tastes. IMO, if the Ewoks had stayed a little "tougher" it would been easier for me to swallow that they did so well against the empire in the Endor battle.

Still, ROTJ is a great film, anything here I say is pretty nitpicky. wink

See, I really don't buy this "technology wall" thing--Lucas just didn't want to spend the money to accomplish them. ROTJ's script was specifically written to be made for 25-30 million dollars (actually pretty affordable for its time as far as FX blockbusters go). If he made 20 Ewok costumes, and was capable of making Chewbacca, theres no reason he couldn't have made 20 Wookie costumes. As for Corsucant--Blade Runner came out BEFORE Return of the Jedi and for the most part has way better special effects than the prequels anyway. Technologically speaking, he could have done the film exactly as he wanted. The problem is that if he included these elements, the budget would have probably gone up by another six million dollars.

I like ROTJ because it brings everything full circle. Luke becomes a Jedi, something he set out to do in ANH, etc. It drew the story to a nice conclusion. It had great special effects for its day.
