I purchased The Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology, and it discusses Darth Vader's suit. I am going to quote directly. Props given to the author Haden Blackman.
"Vader's helmet was the center of the life support system. THe helmet was fitted with an air pump, which was connected to a flat filter system worn on Vader's back. Together, the backpack and air pump continuously cycled purified air through Vader's ravaged lungs. A small, back up air processing filter was lovated in the helmet near Vader's mouth."
The suit purifies air, but from what I understood, it does not supply the oxygen, it has to get it out of the surrounding air. So basically, he should not have been able to fly in that TIE fighter . I also have The Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels, and looked up TIE fighter, and it does say there are no life support systems, and it does not say anything about Vader having one specifically for him with a life support system. It says that all fliers have to wear fully sealed flight suits with self-contained oxygen supplies and atmosphere converters.

He was already on life support so he was able to just get in. That's my take at least.

He wasn't on full life support though. He had some air filters, but when you are in a ship that doesn't have life support, and therefore is not supplying air, there would be nothing to filter out.
