I like Boba, but only from the literature, ROTJ gave him a very girly scream when he flew into the side of Jabba's Sail Barge after Han hits him. He was very intimidating looking while in Jabba's Palace. All his fighting ability basically disappeared in the film....... "IIIIIIIIEEIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" WHAM *GULP* *BURP*

He's the only person ever to escape a Sarlacc...

He was only resurrected for that story because he already had a fan following. Which brings us back to the question, why is that?

The real answer to your question can be found in the world of comics.

Why is Batman so popular? Why is Punisher so popular?

They both are guys with no superpower skills or magic. They are very "real humans" who have great gadgets and are good with weapons. And they hold their own in the DC/Marvel universe. Most boys and men love that cause they are relatable to (Bossk and IG-88 are no-go's cause they just ain't human)

My question: Why isn't Jango more popular?

He got better lines ("Always a pleasure to meet a Jedi" "I'm just a simple man trying to make my way in the universe"), knew how to conduct himself in the midst of battle, and was afforded a halfway-decent death.

My theory is that it's because we were introduced to Boba first. When Jango was introduced as the original Fett with Boba as his clone, it looked the complete opposite to fans. Boba was the original in our minds, and Jango was just added to sell toys and make the clone troopers wicked awesome.

Also, lest we forget, Boba is Jango insofar as he is an exact genetic replication of him, and was raised from infancy by the man, instilled with his beliefs, worldview and profession. Jango gets alot more screentime and dialogue in AOTC than Fett ever got in the whole OT, but through Jango we get to know Boba since they're basically the same person, one generation removed.

Not necessarily. Boba would probably be an even harder man with even less decency than Jango had. He had to be scarred by seeing a Jedi decapitate his father when he was only a child.

Boba has a better name than Jango IMO.

Jango had a nicer color scheme to his armor too, but Boba's is just classic. And Jango is a lot less mysterious when we first see him; we know what his face looks like and a bit about his history.

Yeah, I think it's the mysterious thing. He was at the apex of cool in ESB. I remember when the Boba Fett action figure came out. It was before ESB. Us kids went freakin' nuts for him. The look. There was nothing like him. We knew not why but we knew this was the coolest action figure ever known.

Now, I'm into the EU in a big way but THE LEAST interesting character to me is Boba Fett. I just find him and his stories boring or I don't bother giving them much of a chance. But there was a time where I'd never put up my Fett Man in any bet. I have to say, his dying with a loud scream in ROTJ really took away the je ne se qua about him.

I still think he's cool as far as nostalgia and his look goes. You just have to be able to think back to before certain books and/or movies made him lame to you...

...'course, it's harder for some than for others to do.

I agree with the last two posts. Fett's mystique and his incredibly well-designed armor combine to make him a compelling and fascinating character, a feeling enhanced by his small amount of screentime in ESB. Once we know more about him -- either via Jango or via the various stories about him in the EU -- the mystery is dispelled and we begin to wonder what we thought was so cool about him in the first place. But make no mistake -- in 1978/79, when Fett was first introduced, we young fans embraced him as just about the coolest character ever invented.

Surely Jango had a hard childhood too, if any, which led him to become a hard-nosed bounty hunter in the first place. Putative (and in any case minor) differences in their upbringing aside, Boba and his "father" are 1) genetically identical and 2) share the same worldview and profession. Surely it cannot be disputed that we stand to glean some insight into Boba's character by examining the actions and attitude of his father/genetic donor.
