Surely Jango had a hard childhood too, if any, which led him to become a hard-nosed bounty hunter in the first place. Putative (and in any case minor) differences in their upbringing aside, Boba and his "father" are 1) genetically identical and 2) share the same worldview and profession. Surely it cannot be disputed that we stand to glean some insight into Boba's character by examining the actions and attitude of his father/genetic donor.

Yes, they're genetically identical, but so are identical twins. If you know any identical twins, you know that the personality's not necessarily going to be the same.

I was going through the "100 Greatest Movie Characters" list that TheForce.Net has a link to, and Boba made #74 and has a pretty good explanation for his popularity: http://www.empireonline.com/100-greatest-movie-characters/default.asp?c=79

Why is Boba Fett so popular?

Everyone loves an anti-hero.

Despite the fact in the movies he was a clear-cut villain and he didn't become one till the EU, but you know...

Not necessarily. Boba would probably be an even harder man with even less decency than Jango had. He had to be scarred by seeing a Jedi decapitate his father when he was only a child.

Oh, I agree that we can glean some insight, I just don't think they're effectively identical in personality or worldview.

I don't know, I think the discovery that Boba Fett shares the same genetic code as most of the Stormtroopers -- that he was the unaltered "son" of the prime 'Trooper donor -- is pretty cool and "bad***".

He was never a character I really liked, but dude--he had a jetpack!

I don't know how I feel about the whole introduction of Jango in the prequels...that could also be said to be just catering to the fan base. I guess the whole Jango/Boba storyline is okay, but he did have only a minor part in the OT.

With the original version of the action figure, you could actually shoot your eye out.

How cool is that.

Allow me to dispel your concerns. In a 1979 issue of Starlog magazine, Lucas gave an interview in which he explained that Boba Fett was the originator of the Stormtrooper DNA, and that the clones of the clone wars had evolved into the Stormtroopers of the Imperial era. [This Starlog interview used to be available on the 'Net, but I can't find a link. Anyone?] Of course, the originator is now Jango and Boba is his "son", but the core idea was there in 1979. Lucas can hardly be accused of "catering to the fans" since he developed the idea before Fett had even been seen in ESB.

Boba Fett being so popular was something I never really understood, although that could just be bias on my part. What I mean by that is I never really found him to be as, shall we say, "cool" like other people did. Sure, he had a jet pack and all that, but other than that he seemed like such a throw away character. No "thrown into the Saarlac" puns intended. tongue

I'm guessing it has to do with the EU, never really got what's so special either.

Though I have started to like him since the Robot Chicken skits ^^

Not that I am questioning your integrity, but I find that very, very, hard to believe. I would have to read it to believe it. If Lucas had this grand plan, why wasn't Boba given more exposure in the OT? Why weren't Stormtrooper's referred to as clones?
