	TPOJ posted: Vader wouldn't kill him after Luke refused to join him. That's probably a bad example, as at that point Luke let go and dropped... I think Vader's offer was an indication of some sort of fathery feeling beneath the surface, and maybe his feeling at that point was also mixed. 	Although it still feels like I missed a movie--Episode 5.5: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Sith Lord--Lucas covered his butt in having Padme intone: "There is good in him. I know...there's...still..." In essence, Luke sees good in his rotter of a father because he's an Amidala. Amidalas, you see, possess the uncanny ability to look past nasty little transgressions like child slaughter, cosmocide, and hand-severings. Amidalas are really obnoxious people.

	Luke knew because he felt some of the hope in Vader. Also, Anakin's always been a sucker for attatchment, and whether he knows Luke well or not, he's still his son. So therefore, when Darth Vader didn't kill Luke on Bespin, and kept procrastinating to finish him on the DSII when he refused to fight. 	I'd also chalk it up primarily to the Force, as in Luke was able to feel the goodness and the conflict inside of Vader. 	It's not just the Force since Leia had a harder time forgiving Anakin. I say Luke has Padme's compassion (although how much of it was inherited vs taught by his aunt and uncle is up for debate). It's amazing that they can still have faith in Anakin after a Force choke and hand severing.

You're most likely right in saying that Padmé's compassion and belief that there was good in Anakin had something to do with it. I think Luke was the one that Obi-Wan was holding as Padmé said that and died, so maybe that thought was somehow embedded in him by the Force.
