The Death Star portion certainly isn't as interesting to watch as the Tatooine parts. The weird surroundings and freakish creatures/costumes are replaced with more or less the same modular set pieces and lots of guys in identical uniforms. That might be part of the problem some are having--the 2nd half doesn't feel nearly as rich as the 1st. Plus, as you put more and more pieces of the story together, you lose some of that thrill of discovery and confusion that you experience the whole time until the arrival at Mos Eisley.

Oh I agree. The 40 mins or so from the droids landing on Tatooine...to the Falcon blasting out of Mos Eisley is probably as STAR WARS as SW gets for me. I especially love the almost silent movie aspect of the Dune Sea/Jawa Sandcrawler scenes..Probably the best example of the "Documentary" feel GL was going for.

I prefer the whole film.

I don't think Luke falls into the hero role too easily because it was what he was born to do. As far as I am concerned by the way Owen talks it seems Luke could actually be a better farmer.

As for the banter..."Somebody get this big walking carpet out of my way!" "You said it Chewie! Where did you dig up that old fossil?" "Who is more the fool? The fool or the fool who follows him?" classic lines. How about when Threepio thinks they are dying in the trash compactor? Was that a spoiler? Or how about when Han refers to Leia's soon to be execution as "better her than me!"?

You have to love Jet Porkins going down in a flaming wreckage of Rebel hope.

To be honest I wish I was illiterate of all films made after ANH so I could see it and cry tears of joy.

Nah, I enjoy the entire film. It works for me. I will agree with whomever said the trash compactor scene is a little tedious, but thats prolly because Ive seen it eleventy-billion times. Otherwise, its pretty tight from start to finish and you NEED those battles on the Death Star to get things rolling for the Yavin battle.

I personally do, regardless if it's what he's destined to do, because I think it's too rushed. So many people say that Luke's "coming of age" story, along with the aspects of the Hero's Journey, are so amazing but I have problems with it. Luke starts off as incredibly whiny ("But I was going into Toschee Station to pick up some power converters", or "It just isn't fair. Biggs is right, I'm never gonna get out of here" and "hey play that back, play back the last message", etc.) but becomes a galactic hero in about an hour. When you have someone come of age that quickly, it makes it less believable. In my opinion, Lucas should have toned down Luke's immaturity in order to make his maturity more credible and believable.

I love the entire movie from start to finish.

I love the battle on Tantive IV and the bickering between R2D2 and C-3PO. I love the scenes on Tatooine with Sandpeople, frontier towns and the discovery of Obi-Wan as well as the tough guy attitude of Han Solo. Stormtroopers patroling Mos Eisley is just cool and the escape from Mos Eisley is still exciting.

On the Death Star we have a board meeting of pure evil, we see a princess being tortured and a planet is being blown up simply to make a statement... I mean how cool is that. grin

Once the heroes arrive on the Death Star there is sneaking around, gunfights in the hallways, a trash compactor scene and the showdown between to bitter enemies just before our heroes barely escape, after which a space battle ensues between the Falcon and a few TIE Fighters. Luckily our heroes escape and make it to the secret rebel hideout were a plan is made how to destroy the Death Star.

After this the greatest starfighter battle of all time begins resulting in the near death of our young hero Luke Skywalker by the evil black knight Darth Vader. But moments before Luke is killed, his friend Han Solo returns and saves the day (a scene that always makes me smile).

The movie ends with a ceremony were our heroes are awarded medals for their brave and heroic actions.

What's not to love about this entire movie?

I kind of disagree. I don't think Luke ever really attains the true mantle of "hero" until the final moments of the film when he trusts himself and blows the Death Star. Up to that point, he's more or less as bungling as the rest of them, with a few moments of inspiration (i.e. swinging over the chasm, picking off a few TIE Fighters).

And if Lucas HAD "toned down" Luke, he wouldn't have been nearly as endearing (regardless of the whining), and his journey wouldn't have been as interesting if he seemed ready to handle some of the stuff that came at him. As the movie stands, he's woefully unprepared to leave his own backyard, which makes all of his other amazing stuff experiences even more triumphant.

You nailed it.SW is one of the most complete fun movies you will ever see,it never gets old.Running around the Death Star with the heros is beyond fun and the Trench Run is magic.Love when there in the elevator and when it opens they find there standing in it backwards.Sith is a good highlight reel movie but it's not the complete movie that SW is.

You know, I'll say that I prefer the fist half to the parts on the Death Star. The Battle of Yavin is such a great climax, I can't really say that I prefer the entire first half to the entire second half. But the scenes on Tatooine are just iconic, magical.

I agree. And I also disliked The beginning of ROTJ. I dunno what it is, maybe I just don't like Tatooine. But the second half of the film is what Star Wars is about, escpaing the bad guy and crushing their schemes to save the galaxy.

Aside from the minor battle at the beginning of the movie, most of the first half of the film tends to bore me.

Mind you, dealing with Harrison Ford's hokey dialogue can be a bit hard to take.

Like jedimasterbac said, I like both halves equally, but they are very different from one another.

The first half is very organic and earthy. We see a dry, desert world with strange inhabitants. There are seedy places and questionable characters everywhere. It's Luke's home, all he's ever known. There is a very identifiable quality to Tatooine. Other than the aliens, of course. To me, the first half is what makes Star Wars STAR WARS.

The second half is very different in appearance and tone. Aliens are hardly anywhere to be seen. Instead of the warm earthiness of Tatooine, we see the cold black, gray and white of the Death Star. It's utterly foreign to us, as a space station like that never really existed, obviously.

Whereas Tatooine had naturally occurring bad elements to it (Tusken Raiders, etc), the Death Star is artificial and created with one purpose in mind: to do bad things.

The two halves get married together quite well due to the great writing. The main characters deal with each problem they're handed. It all ends with a very exciting, nail-biting finish.

A New Hope will always be my favorite Star Wars movie. Many of my fondest childhood memories revolve around it.
