Who remembers where they saw STAR WARS in the original 1977 release? What city? What theater?

Well, slightly off topic because I never did see Star Wars in '77, but had I been a wee bit older, I COULD'VE seen it at the same spot I wound up seeing it in '80 (I actually saw Empire first, followed by Star Wars the next day.... at least I believe Star Wars was playing there... might've been the theater down the block):

Loews Paradise Theatre on the Grand Concourse off Fordham Road in the Bronx.

I don't remember which Houston theater my grandmother took my sister (8) and me (7) in '77 to see Star Wars... I only remember than Nanny "loved that dog!" (Chewie) It might have been the Galleria, but I'm not sure. thinking

However, the next summer of '78, I recall very clearly that my family and my best friend's family went together to see the latest Pink Panther movie at the Westchase 5 on Westheimer... and to our delight, my friend and I discovered SW had been re-released. Our mothers let us see Han and Luke by ourselves while everyone else went to see Clouseau.

During the movie -- specifically during the detention block escape -- my friend and I looked at each other with unbridled joy written on our little faces. There was no going back from that moment! I saw SW six more times that summer, mostly at the Westchase, and when ESB came out in 1980 I saw it five times, also at the Westchase.

In 1977, I saw it in a small one-screen theatre called The Park in Cobourg, Ontario, and also at a drive in.

Robin's Cinema, Durham, UK happy My parents took me.

That's where I saw Empire in '80 too. But we went to see Jedi in the Odeon in Newcastle.

I first saw ANH on the last Friday of June, 1977 at the Menlo Park Twin off of Route 1 in Edison, NJ. It was also the same theater I first saw TESB (opening weekend) and ROTJ (opening day).

Sadly, it's long gone. So, for the prequels and TCW, I went up Route 1 to the Menlo Park Mall. It's not the same, but the name is there, at least.

More details re: the original theater can be found here: http://cinematreasures.org/theater/7780/

Harris Theater in Findlay, Ohio which has now been torn down, but I did grab a brick from the rubble when it was torn down to preserve the memory! wink

I wasn't alive in '77, sadly, but I did see the SE version in theaters at the Tinseltown in Pflugerville, Texas.

Wasn't alive, but my mum has mentioned that she saw it during the premiere week on Broadway... and hated it. Oh the irony.
