Going to the academy is like going to school. Once your done, you can jump ship to the Rebellion, like Biggs did. Where else but the academy could Luke get the training he desired? It doesn't necessarily mean he will be part of the Empire.

You know, it just struck me that if it's only possible to use telepathy with other Force sensitive beings then Stormtroopers must be good candidates for Jedi training too, seeing that Obi-Wan used telepathy on one in ANH! Seeing that they're dumb as stumps it proves my point that Jedi can use telepathy on ANYONE. But then, you never know, someone might suggest next that the Stormtrooper and Obi-Wan are brothers! rolling_eyes

You want the real answer? Here it is. When there was only Star Wars (before TESB, ROTJ), Darth Vader was not formerly Anakin Skywalker. That was changed later to make the story more interesting. That's why we get the lame "certain point of view" explanation from Ben later. Also, Leia wasn't Luke's sister either. Again, changed to advance the story. Remember Leia and Luke kissing in TESB? Do you really think George would have filmed that knowing they were siblings? Nope. Leia wouldn't have had the Skywalker name, therefore. I know George claims the OT was written with the stories fully fleshed out in advance, but if that were so, things would have been very different in the original Star Wars. Remember, Star Wars was originally written to be a stand alone movie. It did so well that George completed the other two stories and changed things dramatically with the main characters.

That's the real world explanation.
The scary part is that George Lucas already filmed the TESB scene and still decided to make them brother and sister. And don't forget about the "good luck" kiss in ANH...

The "good luck" kiss wouldn't be inappopriate between siblings. That's pretty much saying siblings shouldn't even kiss one another on the cheek, which is getting into extreme territory. The kiss in ESB was inappropriate.

Okay, say Luke was able to go to the Imperial Academy and put Luke Skywalker on his application. What would hve happened to him then?

I'm just re-watching ANH and the Academy that Luke talks about wanting to leave to go to has caused me some thought.

If it's the Imperial Academy - doesn't this sit a little oddly with how enthusiastically Luke reacts when 3PO tells him that they had involvement with the Rebellion?:

"You know of the Rebellion against the Empire?!"

Plus later when he's talking with Obi-Wan he says:

"It's not that I like the Empire, I hate it."

This is all before they get caught up in escaping from Stormtroopers in Mos Eisley and the Alderaan destruction and the subsequent events in ANH.

So we know Luke is definitely anti-Empire, so why does he WANT to go to the Imperial Academy?

Also if Biggs left to join the Imperial Academy, why is he a rebel by the time we get to Yavin?

From what I unerstand, not only was the Academy the ONLY way for him to get off Tatooine, I got the impression he knew there was a way to get contacts in the rebellion through there. Ithink I read a book or saw deleted scenes where Biggs tells Luke that he found a contact at the Academy and he was going to join the Rebellion. I think that was Lukes rea destination the whole time.

That's probably the reason why the ESB kiss was cut. And the ANH kiss was just a female giving a male friend a friendly kiss. I think you misunderstand that there are different types of kisses, passionate (between lovers), loving (between parents and offspring or those of siblings) and friendly (between friends of different genders). The one in ANH was friendly on the cheek and the one in ESB was passionate full on the lips.

I agree with rsterling78 when I say that I can't recall the ESB kiss being cut... Any links or sources, Black-Tiger?

But I also agree with -MUSTAFAR- and Black-Tiger on the ANH kiss. Though I find it unusual for siblings to kiss on the lips, it's not uncommon and I'm not here to judge. And yes, the ANH kiss was less "romantic." But it was probably kind of a "booster shot" for Luke to give it his all. For example, think of it like a cheerleader giving the quarterback a kiss before the big game. She's trying to give him some sort of hint that "If you do good and give it your all in the game, then I might show interest in you." Even if she isn't interested, she is trying to convince the quarterback (Luke) to give it his all. So it still has an air of romance, but not as much as ESB. In fact, I totally agree that the ESB one was on a entirely different level. I was just trying to be technical by pointing out that the ESB was not the only kiss. George Lucas must have pondered two (maybe one and a quarter) kisses while deciding if they should be brother and sister.

My theory is that he couldn't pass up the prospect of another big plot twist. He either (a) forgot about the kisses while he was too excited about the twist, (b) didn't think that many people would notice, or (c) didn't care since they technically didn't know that they were related.

HERE it is. Although there is a possibility it might've been in the first release of the movie I believe this scene was cut once Lucas decided that Luke and Leia would be brother and sister.

Oh, that's a completely different scene (which I had no idea existed). We were all referring to the scene when Han and Chewie come to visit him in the medical center and she kisses Luke as an insult to Han.

Yeah, and then Luke puts his hands behind his head and gives Han a "Yeah, Corellian, THIS ex-moisture farmer is the alpha male in this room!" look.

The horror...the horror...

I always took that kiss as simply Leia teasing Han. She did have a “thing” for Han at that time as well as for Luke, so she did that so as to make him jealous. Also, at that time (in the story as it turned out) no one knew about their true relationship as brother and sister, so it was done in ignorance.

Come think of it, Leia shows that she's pretty full of it in ROTJ. Girl, you ALWAYS knew that Luke was your brother? Please tell me you really didn't know that when you were Frenching him. As to remembering your real mother, to quote someone, uh yeah, you were 60 seconds old.

I agree with this. It was more of a way to make Han jealous. Han really thought that he was all that, so Leia barely kissed Luke to prove that she liked guys who had a softer side too.
