That ending would work however I am not sure if you knew this but Lando was actually supposed to die.

This is not true. You may have seen a script in which Lando dies, but this is a forgery. As proof of this, TOS has pointed out:
1. That script appears to predate all known drafts of ROTJ by nearly a year. The first draft of ROTJ is dated January 1981, but that one identifies itself from 1980.
2. The script leaves many other plot elements nearly identical to the final film, but which were radically different in earlier drafts. For example, that script still has Luke confronting Vader alone, but in early drafts Obi-Wan came back to life and accompanied him. The scripts still has Ewoks living in trees, but early drafts called the Ewaks, and they lived in underground caves.

Lawrence Kasdan at one point suggested killing off Lando much earlier, during the escape from Jabba's palace, but Lucas strictly overruled him. And while it is widely known that the scene of Luke burning his father's body was shot after production, there is no verifiable record of Lando's escape from the Death Star being reshot so he could live. In fact, doing such a think would require reshooting the end of the film as well, as Lando is clearly involved in the festivites at the end.

Ewok haters should really get their own forum, so they can keep all that crap quarantined and not poison the rest of the forums with it...

That's a pretty "poisonous" comment in itself. Just because folk disagree with your view on ewoks does not mean their opinions are crap or poisonous - you're using pretty emotive language yourself.

Are we not a diverse community with a vast range of opinions? Or should we all bow down in humble reverence for every decision made by GL? If we all held the same views it would make these boards rather dull - and brief. Relax about it, Magic.

hang on, this ending is essentially the same as an ending that was discussed OFFICIALLY by kasdan and lucas, i'm pretty sure. reading quotes from the Secret History Of Star Wars, I'm absolutely sure that one ending initially had Luke declare himself Emperor and then destroy either the Death Star or the main Imperial Base (as it would have been in that draft) at his command. I think it involved pretending that he had turned to the dark side after killing the emperor and vader, but it is fundamentally the same idea - with him being the one declared the new emperor and thus allowing him to take down the empire from within. its a decent idea but not for a star wars movie. might work in a Oliver Stone film though :P

Sorry, I can't go along with this. If you want realism, then Luke would've stayed as Emperor, in order to ensure a smooth transition of government. Then, he'd have become so accustomed to the power that he'd have hung onto the role long after it was no longer necessary. So, in the end, he's the new Palpatine and the whole thing was for nothing.

Much better to have Luke reject power once and for all. It's a much better fit for the moral message of the OT. Besides, would the Imperials really have just accepted Luke as ruler just on his say-so?

Power corrupts, and if Luke were given the power to run an entire faction by himself, he would be subject to falling evil, especially due to the fickle nature of the Force and how easy it is to go to the Dark Side.

If I remember correctly Lando does destroy the DS but he never makes it out. However everyone decided that it would make the film too dark so it never happened.

It's also such an odious cliche in science fiction to have the black guy die. ( Or at least it was, until the Matrix series came along and neatly reversed the cliche. )

Didn't the Sphere,Independance day and Men in Black already do that?

Sithlord715-that sounds pretty good.Deactivate the DS laser I agree should be added. And Luke would stay as Emperor longer to ensure everything went smooth, like someone said, but Lukes shown he wouldn't fall to the Darkside.

Interesting. But one problem. I don't think Luke would be able to simply declare himself emperor. The Moffs would ve a big problem. Thise guys r greedy & hungry for control. Also, there were other cronies who were waiting ti fill the Emperor's shoes.
