Sorry, I can't go along with this. If you want realism, then Luke would've stayed as Emperor, in order to ensure a smooth transition of government. Then, he'd have become so accustomed to the power that he'd have hung onto the role long after it was no longer necessary. So, in the end, he's the new Palpatine and the whole thing was for nothing.

Much better to have Luke reject power once and for all. It's a much better fit for the moral message of the OT. Besides, would the Imperials really have just accepted Luke as ruler just on his say-so?

It's also such an odious cliche in science fiction to have the black guy die. ( Or at least it was, until the Matrix series came along and neatly reversed the cliche. )
