Yeah, but maybe the Death Star gunners are as bad of marksmen as the stormtroopers. tongue

Alderaan may have been a lucky shot for them, heh.

Tarkin to Death Star I gunner in a deleted scene : Great shot, kid. That was one in a million. laugh

I guess if they came from the left side, and Yavin 4 was on the right, they had to stop when they entered the natural gravity well. Then use the sublight engines (wherever the hell those are).

Sublight engines are what they use when they're not in hyperspace travel. You know, for regular maneuvering around space.

A possible explanation:

Say the Death Star's laser only works from a certain range. The DS could easily have jumped to a spot on the other side of the planet, but it would still have had to take the same amount of time to move into firing range. So it's six of one, half-dozen of the other. Tarkin decided that the visual of coming around the planet was preferable to looking at Yavin 4 slowly approaching and constantly turning to ask, "Are we close enough yet?"

Where, not what. Do they just pop out somewhere?

Oh, I misread your post. The Death Star's sublight engines are spaced more or less equally around the equator. They're relatively small, which is why they aren't exactly visible. Similar to TIE Fighter engines, although if you look carefully on some TIEs you can see the red dots of their engines.

From what I have seen and read about the earth and space travel etc. it has to do with the gravitational force on the planet. You can't just travel around it at any speed you want coz it's pulling you in...or something.

THat same thing used to annoy me when they Rebels are trying to flee Hoth and they MUST go straight through the Imperial Fleet. I kept thinkng, why can't the take off into the opposite direction on the other side of the planet where the fleet isn't?

That's an easy one. The path the rebels had to take to get to wherever they were going had a jump point "behind" the Imperial Fleet.

In that case, why didnt they just send some ships out in the opposite direction to lure the Imperial fleet away from their desired jump point ?

Gravity wells and stuff. Everybody has a gravitational force, though some (people) are much less than planets/suns.

As far as Hoth, I assume that that might have been the only viable jump point out of the system towards rebel occupied space.

I was under the impression they pretty much surrounded Hoth, what with Vader's order "so that nothing gets out of the system"

Ahh, but it doesnt look like they had the planet surrounded initially, and to do so takes time.

OZZEL: Lord Vader, the fleet has moved out of light-speed, and we're
preparing to...Aaagh!

VADER: You have failed me for the last time, Admiral. Captain Piett.

Piett steps forward, as the admiral moves away, slightly
confused, touching his throat as it begins to constrict
painfully.

PIETT: Yes, my lord.

VADER: Make ready to land out troops beyond the energy shield and
deploy the fleet so that nothing gets off that system. You are in
command now, Admiral Piett.

PIETT: Thank you, Lord Vader.
