Just a question I've been thinking about.

By the time of ANH, Luke knows about the Clone Wars, but he didn't recognize the name of the great General Obi-Wan Kenobi. Is this explained anywhere? Had the Empire censored or re-written the history books? Or is Obi-Wan Kenobi a more common name than it seems? thinking

The stance taken by some EU is that the Empire did indeed purge the records.

Although Luke lived on Tatooine, the Clone Wars were such a big deal that he obviously would have heard about them. As far as hearing of Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Empire probably censored the material to cover up the feats done by the Jedi during the war.

Death Star mentions that Palpatine had seen fit to issue a ban on any and all information regarding the Jedi Order and the Force. It also mentions that since the records had been purged, those growing up in the Imperial-era had virtually no knowledge of the Jedi's true role in the Clone Wars, only the facade that they were the betrayers of the Republic. Lastly, it says that their elders were smart enough not to open their mouths, for fear of Imperial reprimand. But, seeing as how Luke grew up on Tatooine, it doesn't seem odd that stories about the Clone Wars were circulated but names were not.

It was also alluded to in Coruscant Nights.

That's right. The Empire ordered all mention of the Jedi Order and the history of the Clone Wars to be stricken from all records.

Palpatine is genius.

Not only did he frame the Jedi but he almost made cloning itself illegal so no one could raise an army against his reorganized Galactic Empire!

Firstly, considering Owen presumably knows what happened to Anakin, he probably didn't want to go making his exploits too infamous, he also believes his father was a freighter pilot (If I remember correctly), so explaining the exploits of another Anakin Skywalker is not to good an idea.

Also, Obi-Wan said about Owen didn't want Luke "following old Obi-Wan on some dam fool idealistic crusade", so I should say all exploits from the Clone Wars in the Lars household were kept at a minimum.

Also, other then when Obi-Wan/Anakin came to see Jabba, the Clone Wars didn't really effect Tatooine, so maybe the people know it occurred, but not so much of the details...

I can't see how the Empire purging records would have helped too much, since people would still remember what happened...?

Most people didn't know the details of what happened, and had never even seen a Jedi before.

But wouldn't what ever passes as the news/media, inform the general public of the exploits of the Jedi during the Clone Wars, I mean in the ROTS Novel, i am sure they mentioned that in school, kids use to play act about being Jedi, and ewere saying who are you Anakin or Obi-Wan, and when the Chancellor got 'kidnapped', they novel mentions the public thinking about don't worry, soon Skywalker and Kenobi will be here to sort the day, or something like that?

Sure, that's true. But the Jedi were more of a mysterious legend than anything else, and when they disappeared, it seems that no one really cared.

Plus there would have been Luke's perception of Ben Kenobi - that of a hermit and an old man - no doubt not helped by Owen's derogatory remarks about him. Even if Luke did not regard Ben as crazy, he still might not have envisioned Ben as being a one-time dashing General and powerful Jedi warrior.

The perceptions of the young towards the old can be narrow-sighted.
