Regardless of his perception of "Ben" Kenobi, my point was why he didn't recognize "Obi-Wan Kenobi"'s name after watching Leia's message.

Kenobi was one of many generals on many sides of a complicated, galactic-scale war that concluded 20 years before Luke was born. Just because the movies tend to focus on Kenobi and a few others doesn't necessarily mean that the rest of the galaxy is as familiar with them as we are.

I don't see what's so outrageous about that.

I agree, especially since the Movies were rather Kenobi-Orientated, and Tatooine was not vastly involved with the Clone Wars, so it would be more tales coming in from pilots/tourists/visitors.

One small query:

a complicated, galactic-scale war that concluded 20 years before Luke was born.

Are you sure...? raised_brow thinking

The war concluded just before Luke was born as it only ended with the deaths of the Separatist Council at the hands of Vader.

I never said that it was outrageous, I just think that it's a generalization that is not necessarily true.

I didn't take it as a generalization, but merely that they can be, but I can see your point.

My observation about youth and perceptions of the old was not a generalisation of all young people, but it does happen to be true for many. That's why so many old people (in the West at least) feel as though they are treated by younger folk as irrelevant and "on the scrap heap of life". Such observations of behaviour should not be perceived as personal attacks on all individuals.

Besides, getting back to what I was saying, Luke had only known Ben to be a hermit, a recluse, with his Uncle Owen's off-hand remarks about Kenobi being a bit crazy. Therefore in his young and immature state of mind (which Luke has before he sets off on his hero's journey), he could easily not picture Kenobi as being a one-time dashing general and Jedi warrior, etc, etc.

My point is that it's about seeing it from Luke's point of view at that point in time.

Kenobi could be a common name among Tatooinians. He might tought he has nothing too do with the famous general.
