It's not so much inconsistent as unexpected.

In ANH, Vader notices the Force is strong with "this one," referring to Luke. We have no indication that Luke and Vader are in any way related except that Vader allegedly betrayed and murdered Luke's father.

Then in ESB, Vader now knows Luke by name and is interesting in finding him, an interest that appears independent of his main objective of ending the Rebellion.

I think the original poster's point is that a number of filmgoers must have thought, "Did I miss something"?

It's not an inconsistency. Vader knew of Luke post-ANH, pre-ESB. His dialog with Captain Piett confirms this.

The inconsistency is in his conversation with Palpatine. Vader acts as though he's ignorant of Luke's existence. in the original version, there is no surprise. In the revised edition he's totally surprised.

Now earlier in the film, he knows Luke by name. he has to know that Luke is related to him in some way. Unless the name Skywalker is as common as Smith.

Try Half Price Books. I got that comic there a few years ago. Haven't read it though.
