I don't know why he told that to Luke, seemingly a less experienced pilot, rather than Biggs or Wedge but maybe that was the way he wanted it. Perhaps he did know that Luke had exceptional shooting skills, or maybe he wanted Luke to lead the attack so that he could concentrate on taking the shot whilst the more experienced pilots covered him.

I don't remember that scene. Is that on the Special Edition DVD? That would make more sense than just Luke showing up out of nowhere and leading an attack run with no track record.
