Real-world apes are intelligent enough to acquire sign language, certainly, but as of 2009 any and all ape species have yet to develop a system of religious philosophy, to construct houses around a communal center, or to craft and play musical instruments. monkey grin

Exactly. Lets not forget the ability to make a bow & arrow, aim it, and hit your target.

Lord luvaduck, you'd think you were describing Minoan culture rather than ewoks!

You think that ewoks are on a cultural par with the ancient Minoans....? Minoans who built temples, sewer facilities and had a writing system? And ewoks - wee furry critters who jump at the sight of a helmet being removed?

wink

Would any Classicists like to comment?

I thought the sequence of events was as follows:
1) Rebel team (1 dozen? 2 dozen warm bodies) goes to forest moon without any hope of assistance.
2) By accident, the leaders/heros are involved with the Ewoks, who provide _information_ about the back door to the bunker.
3) _On his own volition_, Wicket Winchester Warrett III, Esq., _takes it upon himself_ to go steal a speeder bike and thereby provide a diversion.
4) The advantage of this diversion is short lived, because the Rebel team does not post guards outside the bunker, and because reinforcement Imperials arrive ("Rebel scum!").
5) Exterior to bunker, the Imperials _Know Full Well_ that they are not dealing with a domestic disturbance / insurgence of a native population. They are holding prisoner highly armed Rebel soldiers who have been caught with enough TNT to destroy the shield generator and thereby leave the DSII defenseless.

Everything up to now has recognizable motivation: Although from a directorial standpoint the Ewoks were to provide a diversion, they were not a diversion that the Rebel team was _counting upon_ as a tactical component of their plan.

6) So some Ewoks blow some horns, signaling to the viewer the clarion promise of the element of surprise.

7) From the movie itself, it appears that the Imperial command structure utterly forgets that they have been holding prisoner dangerous highly armed human Rebel soldiers, and somehow choose to go chasing down the insurgent native population with just about everything they have, as if there had been No dangerous party of highly armed Rebels with TNT, but that this was just another Sunday morning in Baghdad.

I do not understand this last decision on the Imperials' part.

Did I miss some clew of motivation? I'd love to have a harmonious Endor experience.

It's the usual Imperial response to a surprising situation without someone telling them what to do. tongue

And given that the Rebels were completely unable to get inside the bunker outside of tricking people inside, it didn't really matter-the stormtroopers had Han, Leia, 3PO, and R2 pinned down and unable to move anywhere until late in the game.
