The difference here is that Batman and Bond NEEDED a reboot. They're franchises were bum-crumbed into the ground by crap film after crap film. A fresh perspective and new direction was needed. What they were trying wasn't working AT ALL.

Star Wars hit at the right time and had a golden spark. If these movies ever do get remade (by George or whomever) everyone will literally -bleep- a brick, including myself. Besides that, what a way to confuse people even more. OT with the technology of yesterday, a PT with the effects of today, and another OT with the effects of tomorrow. Geeze. Alot of folks still don't comprehend the fact that the orginals happen AFTER the prequels (I've met alot of them trust me).

Which is why a PT-compliant OT made with tomorrow's technology would work perfectly.

Let the "Original Star Wars Trilogy" revert to its old, theatrical version, and retain its place as the classic trilogy that launched an epic franchise.

Let the Prequel Trilogy be the first half of the rebooted Star Wars saga, since it already only bears a superficial resemblance to the OT.

Let the Remake Trilogy be not merely remakes of the OT, but a reimagined conclusion to the story started in the PT, with an Episode IV that is actually designed to follow Episode III instead of the current one which is designed to be the start of the story.

Retooled (and likely with a stronger focus on Vader to home in on the 'Tragedy of Anakin Skywalker' angle), Saga lovers could finally have a cohesive and complete six-episode story. And those of us who just love the O-OT could have them preserved the way they should be - as enshrined cinema classics rather than living documents constantly changing in a futile effort to seem perpetually 'modern'.

Jedi_Halcyon, you know that I respect and share your admiration of the original versions of the OT. But no matter how closely we hold those films in our hearts, nor how highly we regard them as paragons of cinematic excellence, what you're hoping for -- the return of the original versions to their rightful place in the public consciousness -- is an impossible pipe dream. For 12 years now, the SE versions have irrevocably replaced the theatrical editions. SpikeTV and other cable networks, DVD, the imminent and long-heralded 3D versions -- all of these have the SE versions, which are now burned forever into the public imagination. There is no going back.

Re-makes will not cause LFL to wake up and replace all copies of the much-touted SEs with the original versions. It simply isn't going to happen. Supporting re-makes only muddies the waters and confuses the issue, as Hootini has succinctly explained.

There probably won't be a remake in our lifetime. Even after Lucas dies, he'll have the rights for such a thing very secure with his estate and there will be no financial need to go against his wishes. There may be upgrades made to it forever, to keep them viable with the next 100 years of fans who can't bear the pain of looking at old effects, but no remakes. It would go against his philosophy of movies being created in post, with the filming considered an expensive gathering of raw clay to be molded later. The clay is already there, it would just be a waste of his company's resources to go gather it again.
(The closest thing to a remake I want is a 60s epic-style Obi-Wan movie culled from the three prequels!)

I have an odd feeling that the next releases are rendering as we speak.

they most certainly WILL be remade, but not by Lucas and not in the immediate future.

Making movies is about making money - and if there is a market for it, it will happen. Give it twenty years.....

If there was a way of making all the Hamill, Ford, etc. younger just so all the OT could be reshot with slightly less silly dialogue and certain lines could be redone more convincingly, then I'd say yes. The OT, particularly ANH with the same actors, but less silly and with modern effects and better duelling would be great. I'd watch it. Unfortunately, no such method exists.

What makes you think an OT remake done in GL's lifetime would be less silly? Given the example of the PT films and the SE additions, a GL-produced OT remake would be, in the words of Monty Python, "a lot more silly!" wink

Agreed. The franchise has, in recent years, really been geared more towards children. If the original films were remade by Lucas, they wouldn't be less silly. He would likely want to make ANH a bit lighter and give it more slapstick like TPM had. I also wouldn't want to see Lucas remake Empire. No offense to him or anything, but there's a reason why it's considered the best. whistling

I thinnk it would be interesting to have a 20 episode TV series to tell the story of each film i.e. 120 episodes in all. The detail that could be crammed into each episode would be mind-boggling, but it would develop the characters hugely. However, I'd also want a re-imagining of the story rather than a like-for-like representation, rather like Batman, Bond or BG. I doubt Lucas would ever be interested in this, but maybe in 100yrs...

After the new Star Trek film, I'm absolutely convinced Star Wars needs a reboot/remake. Most of us would be concerned with actor choices but we haven't seen how good other actors could be. I actually think all the new cast in Trek is better than the old (including for Spock). Although I wouldn't think it should be done just yet, as the last film only came out four years ago. Just don't let Lucas do it tongue .

Ok I may get shot down here?

I like the Special Editions and the clarity of the visual improvements.

If I had a choice though I would of left the original trilogy alone apart from cleaning up the quality of the movies in general.

I'm very thankful they released the original's (well, nearly)a couple of years back as that's what I prefer watching over the SE.

I think any further tampering such as a digital Yoda etc would distract even more from what is a classic masterpiece that really has been tampered with enough already.
Like it wasn't enough that we have a whole different Saga thanks to the PT as it is.

As for a complete remake. No. That would be tragic IMHO.

Some possible topics for discussion:

- What are the pros and cons of an original trilogy remake?
- Why should/shouldn’t the original trilogy be remade?
- What would be the implications of an original trilogy remake on the original trilogy, the Star Wars Saga and cinema as a whole?
- How would an original trilogy remake work? Would you want the same exact story, or would you want a reboot/re-imagining akin to Batman Begins and Casino Royale?
- What might an original trilogy remake look like?
- Who would you cast in an original trilogy remake?
- Anything else relating to an original trilogy remake is fair game for discussion.

So there you go. Have at it! happy

-Pros:image and sound etc etc, ability to do anything pretty much all the advantages the PT had

Cons:GL's diffferent and so are the people working on the films, remaking alltime best movies is tricky and usually turns out bad,it would further damage the SW name and fan base. The gritty look of the OT and TPM would be replaced with that eye searing
digitial look of AOTC and ROTS.

-It should be remade that way GL can get the movies he's always wanted and wouldn't have to alter the OT movies and do lucas speak to make the movies fit.

-OT could finally be left alone to stand as the classics that they are.The Sage as a whole would acually fit together with a remake. The acting visuals, story ect ect would be consistent with one another. It would be for the first time,The tragedy of Darth Vader and not thrown together from the Adventures of Luke Skywalker.People would be pissed like they usually are when you mess with classic movies.

-Just about all remakes change the story anyway but an OT remake would be rewritten with it being the Tragedy of DV in mind so alot of the OT would have to be rewritten.DarthLassic007 has the right idea with his post.

-Like others have said,it would look like the PT

-I'll have to think about the casting, not sure.

If Seven Samurai can be remade the so can SW,it's not special.

I'm in support of remakes if it means George will stop altering the OT and let people enjoy it for what it is.

I'm against remakes if it means that the entire OT will be thrown out for not matching up with his "original vision".

And unless the remakes are total reimaginings I wouldn't watch them; I have no interest in watching shot-for-shot remakes of movies I've already seen before.

I'd hate to see the effects look just like they did in the prequels. To me, the effects in the OT, for the most part, are superior to those of AOTC and ROTS. The latter two prequel films suffered in regards to SFX because they were shot entirely digitally. Lots of special effects doesn't mesh with digital film making, at least not yet. It makes the movies look too much like cartoons and video games. I think a perfect example of this outside Star Wars is The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The Yeti scene is a good example of ridiculous special effects meeting digital film.

In regards to special effects in SW, the most superior film for SFX was The Phantom Menace, in my opinion. It combined the right level of CGI, sets, and location shooting, and was shot on film instead of digitally. It made it look more real than anything in the other films, at least from my perspective.
