So what did Luke have against womp rats?

I'm willing to guess the womp rats said some derogatory remarks about "his moma".

Also, isn't killing/ torturing small defenseless animals the first sign of someone who needs some serious help?

Maybe, but then so is posting in a thread without reading the previous comments.

If there were large numbers of six-foot-long("I used to bulls-eye womp rats back home. They're not much bigger than two meters.") rodents near where I lived, you bet they'd be on the priority list of things to get rid of. tongue

Then,um, whatever the Womp rats eat would become over-populated and whatever eats
Womp rats would become extinct. You can't upset the balance of nature over fear.

Sure, if there is a Womp rats in or near your house, then kill it, but going out to Beggar's Canyon
where there are no human settlements to target-practice on Womp rats is simply wrong.

I never saw Mos Espa, Lars' homestead, any Tusken Raider camps, Ben's humble abode, or Mos Eisley overrun with Womp rats.

If Womp rats were wiped out, then the Sand People would be more likely ro raid human settlements looking for food.

Live and let live.

There was that one guy who talked about this weird energy field, tried to live in balance with nature, and was drunk all the time.

I really take issue with the arbitrary designation of some species as vermin and others as not - any animal can carry disease, household pets and other people included - but sadly it's a pretty universal human tendency to find specific animals to vilify.

I do think the implication of the movie, though, isn't that Luke's killing them because he thinks they're "vermin;" he kills them for sport. He is not Jedi-like in ANH.

Disease ridden or no, womp rats are over six feet long, spiney and betoothed, as evidenced in the opening post. In the already harsh and hostile environment of Tatooine, a creature of this size and offensive disposition (as further indicated by its name, concordant with a striking action, as in "to womp") needs to be eradicated from all civilized areas. Otherwise injuries to the locals and the disappearances of small (or medium-sized!) children are likely to occur.

For all we know, the womp rat is a disease-ridden and violent monster whose numbers must be kept in check lest they overrun the local farms with gore drizzling from their slavering toothsome maws. Sure, it might be a docile, tender-hearted nurturer of all that is beautiful and kind, but with at least two options before us, why conclude that Luke is a reprehensible animal murderer? I for one don't see him that way, and I'm not likely to accept an interpretation of his character that paints him as such.

That sort of puts this in a different light.

I think this ends the debate once and for all.

This is from Wookieepedia;

Quote

The womp rat was a large, omnivorous rodent native to Tatooine. It was widely considered to be a pest. They were slightly larger than two meters in size. There were three races of womp rats: ones that lived in Beggar's Canyon, ones that lived in the Jundland Wastes, and swamp womp rats. It was not unheard of for people to have domesticated womp rats as pets, but Luke Skywalker and his friends used to "bulls-eye" womp rats with stun blasts, while flying T-16 skyhoppers, for fun and target practice.

End quote

Disease-ridden? Some people had them for pets.

Luke killed them? He only stunned them.

Now, I can lay my head at night knowing that creatures in their own environment
were not senselessly slaughtered so Luke can practice someday to blow up a Death Star
that he didn't even know existed at the time in question.

But, I have another question.

Where on Tatooine are the swamps that the swamp Womps rats lived in?

I do know there is at least one large body of water on Tatooine as clouds
can clearly be seen above the Dune Sea when R2-D2 and C-3PO are wondering over it.

grin

Hmm... flying womp rats? tongue

I'd guess that some womp rats were taken to another planet (maybe as someone's exotic pets) and adapted to wetter conditions in their new home. To someone from Tatooine, any place with more moisture than the Sahara would probably qualify as a swamp.

Hmm. So Luke and his friends were hunting when they shot at womprats, but they didn't kill the animals? Sounds like a G-rated Lucas retcon along the lines of "Greedo shot first" to me. tongue
