Umm... The empire had no problem destroying a completely pacifistic planet like Alderaan then I don't think a small floating city is a problem for them to wipe off the face of the galaxy.

be that as it may, the empire wanted control of bespin, correct? well, wouldnt it have been easier to simply kill lando? instead they used landos weaknesses against him, and our heroes.
plus alderan was a rebel planet with generals on it, and bespin was neutral.

There are other facilities on Bespin that the Empire could use. Cloud City was just more populated.

On the other hand, the character of Lando is less stereotypical because he's not even the perfect token black guy who is thrown in there just to prove a point. He is just as humanized as the other characters and has to make tough choices that are not always the right ones. He is as complex as the other characters of the saga. His race is not even an issue.

In Lando's position, I'd have done the same thing. He made the reasonable choice, the lives of several thousand people, or the lives of his two friends, a chick he just met, and their friend who he doesn't know. I'd have felt bad about it, but the alternative would be worse.

I'm sorry but . . . you were paying attention to the movie's plot. Right? Vader went after Han and Leia, because he wanted to use them to get Luke. When Boba Fett realized that they were on their way to Bespin, Vader got there first and coerced Lando into cooperating, by threatening Bespin's existence. Lando would help him capture Han and Leia. Vader suspected that if Luke was strong with the Force, he would detect his friends' suffering and head for Bespin to help them. Which is what happened. Lando had hoped that once Vader got what he wanted - namely Luke - the Sith Lord would leave ASAP and leave Bespin alone. Unfortunately . . . things did not turn out as Lando and everyone else had hoped. Okay?

Re: the "is Lando a traitor?" debate: he is. He had a hard decision to make, but ultimately he betrayed his friends after promising them refuge. What's worse, he turned them over to dangerous fascist that wanted to do them harm. If that isn't a traitor, I don't know what is.

But him being a traitor is somewhat moot anyway because he quickly realizes the consequences of his choice and begins making amends almost right away.

He would have been a traitor no matter what he did. He really didn't have a choice. If innocent people who were supposed to be under his protection had died because he refused to turn over his friend, would that have been any better?

If you had a choice of betraying 3 friends or being responsible for the deaths of 10000 strangers, which would you choose? The choice is actually very easy. It doesn't mean it's a GOOD choice, but all you need to do is weigh the numbers to figure out what to do.

First of all, when was Vader going to kill thousands of innocent people in Cloud City? This is not even hinted at in the film--it's a fan conception that caught on to exonerate Lando. More likely, Vader would have simply tortured and maybe eventually killed Lando for (heroically) refusing to cooperate.
