Right. It's a CONTINUITY ERROR, one of many.

Let's face it, when Lucas wrote that scene in ROTJ he intended Leia's mother to have survived beyond Ep3. When it came to writing the script many, many years later he changed his mind and shoehorned Padme dying on screen into Ep3. It's like banging a square peg into a round hole. To me it doesn't fit very comfortably, though I accept that somehow Leia had memories of Padme and Luke didn't and the Force is a convenient way of explaining it. However, there ARE possible alternatives for people who don't accept that, such as the alternative theory when I started this thread.l

Yes, when ROTJ was written (and probably long before) Luke and Leia’s mother was to have gone into exile taking Leia with her, most probably on Alderaan. She was to die there when Leia was just an infant leaving her in the hands on the Alderaan Royal Family. And I don’t accept all the “Leia had her eyes open” stuff at all, just like I don’t accept that Luke only contacted Leia in ESB because he knew she was his sister. One, Leia wasn’t even “The Other” when ESB was written. Two, Luke wasn’t even aware of her being his sister until Yoda and Ben told him in ROTJ. Three, telepathics can make mind contact with anyone, not just other telepathics. Luke only contacted her because Leia was the only living person left who he knew and trusted.

Yes, I agree with all of the above. My explanation presumed an in-universe perspective, which I did not state clearly.

From an in-universe perspective, it's an intriguing question as why Luke should have had no Force-visions of his mother when Leia appears to have had them (according to PT-inclusive Saga continuity). It may be as simple as "Luke is sensitive to images and feelings from his father" and "Leia is sensitive to images and feelings from her mother". We might even cite direct evidence from the films for this interpretation, as follows:

* Luke feels the conflict within Vader and senses there is still good in him
* Leia does not feel this

* Leia recalls images and feelings of her mother
* Luke does not recall these

* Luke can see Anakin's Force-spirit
* Leia cannot see it

Tenuous, perhaps, but still evident and demonstrable.

I had a theory about this that I basically wrote into a fanfic. He may have had some sort of memory, but I theorized that Obi-Wan had to erase it from his subconscious so as to protect him. That's what my theory was, anyway.

Obi-Wan was holding Luke when Padme was talking about how there was still good in Anakin. Somehow, he can remember that portion of Padme's feelings but not anything else. At least it was the most important part.

If you read the Rogue Squadron books ...
And imply from the films ...
Luke trusted Wedge wholly and without any doubt.

You can bank on it.

Perhaps you meant only pertaining to this maternity issue ...

I'm not really interested that much in non-canon stuff. Some of it's great, especially the semi-canon stuff like Dark Forces and Shadows of the Empire, but most non-film stuff I wouldn't put any weight on whatsoever. I was saying that Han and Leia were Luke's best friends by the time of ESB. One was frozen so that left only one other who could rescue him from beneath Cloud City. Besides, how the hell could Wedge rescue Luke from beneath Cloud City if he was nowhere around for light years?

Just so you know, Expanded Universe books are canon unless specifically stated to be non-canon.

Made by any of Lucas' companies, are they? If not then they're non-canon.

I think you guys are forgetting one MAJOR point!

While I agree that it's most likely a continuity error, the only other explanation is that Leia is referring to her adopted mother. This would mean that she actually grew up and had time with her adopted mother, while Luke grew up only knowing his uncle and aunt. And in the scene where they finally discuss it, Leia may or may not have known if her [adopted] parents were Luke's as well (although she probably figured it out). So basically Leia grew up with a mother, and Luke didn't.

Continuity Error demystified!

Luke: Leia, do you remember your mother, your real mother?

Leia: She died when I was very young. She was very beautiful, kind, but sad.

Continuity Error NOT demystified!
