Vader's mask is equipped with a voice-changer, obi-arin-kenobi. Don't even try arguing with it.

Be careful when discussing a British accent, that sounds rather vague...
Liverpol? South London? Centeral England? North England?
Believe it or not they are all different... (I would know, I live in Britain!)
To hear the most diverse range of accents possible in a day, spend 24 hrs in Trafalgar Square!!

PS: I say rsterling old chap, we don't all talk like that old bean...
Just popped in for a Buchers, fancy a rosie lee? Just sit down at the Aunt Mable, and I'll pour you a cuppa. wink

Then there’s Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish, which are all British.

You don't? Do you also not all wear bowler hats and a pin striped suit while carrying a copy of the Times under one arm with a long unopen umbrella in your other hand after you've had fish and chips for lunch while on your way to play cricket before tea time?

Not that I'm stereotyping or anything.

Well, we all think that Americans go around with large cigars, dressed up as cowboys or baseball players. Oh, and that most of them only exist for baseball/american football/basket ball. And they all own 5 cars. Also, every single American has been to at least one convention of some sort. (we don't really have those over here- at least, not on the same scale sad )
Is that wrong? tongue

In that last bit, I was talking Cockney Rhyming Slang. wink And Criket is pretty boring, tho fish and chips are nice. grin
(Although actually, I do read The Times occasionally. And my Dad does go around with a large unopen umbrella, though it isn't black. Scary. worried )

Anakin/Vader with a British accent, huh? Hmmmm...

DARTH SIDIOUS: [Vader's new mechanical body arises from the steam] Lord Vader... can you hear me?

DARTH VADER: I say, my good man, I've had a spot of bad luck lately. Waiting for my luck to change, what? I say, old bean, any word from Padme?

DARTH SIDIOUS [clearly confused]: It seems in your anger, you killed her.

DARTH VADER: Oh, bloody hell. Well, got to keep a stiff upper lip, old chap, you know how it is. Still, chocks away, tally ho and all that.

That is SO not what the British are like.

I was curious as to why Anakin's voice went from an American accent to an almost British one after he donned the suit?

The same reason Madonna developed a British accent: power, corruption, and tons of plastic surgery.

Hah! I could go into a political conversation about Americans here, but I won't... wink

He has a hint of British-ness in ANH. So does Princess Leia. I'd say their characters just weren't quite nailed down at that point.

I know what Americans mean when they refer to someone having a "British accent". They mean upper-class ENGLISH, like Prince Charles or Hugh Grant. That's a very small minority of the English population though.

Well, Darth was played by a british actor, even if he wasn't voiced by one. Good old David Prowse! I can't help thinking that he gave us English a 'voice' if you will in the films. happy
Though they probably only chose him because he was the only one tall enough and who could act well. wink

I think the accent thing is subtle enough to work...Vader's accent wasn't really THAT heavy. Just certain words had a kind of different inflection. I'd imagine anyone who spends all his time with someone WITH a "British" accent (palpatine, not to mention most of the high ranking imperial officers) would catch on to parts of it after 20 years or more...

Besides, I've always thought that the way Anakin sounds in AOTC and ROTS is close enough to make it work. It's not as "heavy" as it is later on, but it's there. If you listen close to certain words that end with "R", or ways that certain "A's" are pronounced, they have a HINT of that slight inflection. I think it works well...

James Earl Jones sounds British? About as much as I sound French.....

...sounds like what it is ..... a deep south accent well enunciated.
