If I hear someone speak Chinese, a language I don't understand, I won't know what is being said. But I will be able to recognize syllabification. I may not understand the content of what is being said, but I will recognize that a sequence of different and distinct sounds are forming words and sentences.

When Chewbacca speaks, I don't hear anything that sounds like a coherent language:

Han Solo: ”Chewie? Chewie, is that you?”
Chewbacca: "Grrrwwwrr!"
Han Solo: ”Ch-Chewie! I can’t see, pal. What’s going on?”
Chewbacca: "Grrrwwwrr!"
Han Solo: ”Luke? Luke’s crazy! He can’t even take care of himself, much less rescue anybody.”
Chewbacca: "Grrrwwwrr!"
Han Solo: ”A Jedi Knight? Jeez, I’m out of it for a little while, everyone gets delusions of grandeur!”

Sorry, Han, I'm not buying that you're understanding one word of what Chewie is saying. In fact, I'm not buying that Chewie is saying anything at all. By the way, where did you get the word "Jeez"? That's a somewhat politer form of the exclamation "Jesus!". How would you know that? But I digress...

Allegedly, the wookie language is called "Shyriiwook". Hey, I wonder what the wookie word for "Shyriiwook" is? I'm guessing it's "Grrrwwwrr!". According to the link, here's a Basic sentence and the Shyriiwook translation:

He says he's a Jedi Knight now.
Rowr ahragh awf ahraroww rowh rohngr grgrff rf rf.

Whatever.

I guess I'm just a skeptic. Or as a wookie would phrase it, "Grrrwwwrr!".

Han was raised by a Wookiee named Dewlanna, so naturally he'd be able to understand Shyriiwook. And since Han grew up on a trading vessel, he had a lot of experience with other cultures and was able to pick up languages quickly.

What the hell?! Hang on...

Okay, I just checked Wikipedia:

Han comes under the care of Dewlanna, a widowed Wookiee "indebted" to the ruthless captain.

What kind of twisted, drug-induced, EU-perverted retcon is this? This makes IG-88 being the "brain" of the Death Star II look like something out of freaking Shakespeare!

All I can say is "Grrrwwwrr!"

Lucas himself said that Han was raised by Wookiees. The Han Solo Trilogy just filled in the details.

How does one learn the African Click language? Or binary? Or German? How does one learn language at all? It's not ingrained at birth it's learned. So I think that it is safe to say that Han could learn what Chewbacca says or at the very least the gist of it. I myself don't speak any language other then English but if I go to an Italian opera I understand what's going on. Even if Han wasn't raised by wookiees the years of travel with Chewie would have given him at least the most basic understanding.

For a second, I read that as "Lucas himself was raised by Wookiees".

It would be unlikely that if Han was raised by Wookiees, all the Wookiees in his "family" would understand English (or Basic or whatever Han speaks), so it only makes sense that Han is fluent in Shyriiwook.

I'd love to see that!

Wookiees are incapable of speaking Basic, just as humans can't replicate all the growls of Shyriiwook.

Well if the Wookiees don't have a language, how do they communicate with each other? It's a weird sounding language yeah but who's to say you can't have a one like that in a galaxy with billions of worlds and sentient species.

I mean even in real life, if you don't speak a language and you're listening to someone else speak it it just sounds like a garbled mess that makes no sense. Same thing really.

THAT was awesome.

On a related note, I always thought everyone, Luke and Threepio in particular, was doing the same thing to Artoo. It also made SW even funnier to imagine Artoo's dialog as being similar to Kenny from South Park's un-muffled dialog. mischief

"You watch your language!" - Threepio *snicker*
