Han understands his homedawg Chewbacca perfectly well.

Me no comprende Espanol, therefore, everything a Spanish speaking person says sounds the same to me, but someone who understands English and Spanish doesn't think every answer they give sounds the same.

In English two, to, and too sound the same but each having different meanings.

See where I'm going with this?

Chewbacca may sound the same to you when he answers two questions with the same "Grrrwwwrr!" , but you don't understand his language.

I still have yet to record two Hispanic women arguing, then finding an audio
file of chickens clucking, importing both sounds into Premiere, expanding both sound tracks to look at the waveform of each to see the similiarities between the two.

I'm going to partnersinrhyme.com right now to find chicken sounds.

The existence of homophones in a real (albeit horribly messed up) language like English provides no comparison whatsoever to the animal sounds that make up Chewie's "dialogue".

And neither is Huttese, which is based on Quechua, another real language.

If you simply assume it is a language in SW, you don't need elaborate analogies. Especially not the one that Chewie just sounds like gibberish because us Earthlings don't understand Shyriwook. It is just growling, even in-universe.
I think a better comparison would be if we suddenly found out dogs were actually talking to each other. Wouldn't change the fact that it's barking, just barking with well-hidden syntax.

But then again, if Chewie yelled at you in space, you'd hear him, so it doesn't matter if his "language" is a bear making violent love to a tiger or however it was made.

I have a better idea.

Let's all nitpick every little detail about Star Wars while Uncle George counts his money, secure in the knowledge that he never, ever has to work again if he doesn't want to and can travel anywhere at anytime with any and all of his family, friends, co-workers, business partners, investors, chaffeurs, compadres, janitors, security guards, assistants, muchachos, posse, homies, heads of studios, hangers-on, beggars, plagarizers, Star Wars fans, Howard the Duck fans, and can purchase any sports car at any price, or purchase any yacht, boat, canoe, kayak, log raft, Mercedes, BMW, Rolls Royce, Bentley, Hummer, dragster, Funny car, jalopie, wagon, chariot, bike, trike, unicycle, castle, estate, mansion, house, apartment, shack, tipi, tent, mud hut, adobe or probably just about anything else that his benevolent, altruistic, kind, caring, giving, good, generous, selfless, thoughtful heart desires.

Shall we?

You have no room to speak! Han understands Chewie because he was taught how to speak to Wookiees. You have to have a trained ear for the Wookiee language.

There is no such thing as "the British accent" either, and yet people say it all the time. English-speaking people, no less. Let Westerners (if ^he is one tongue ) refer to one of the Chinese languages as "Chinese" and/or assume they meant "a Chinese language". wink
After all, it doesn't matter which one he doesn't understand - he understands none of them.

If I hear someone speak Chinese, a language I don't understand, I won't know what is being said. But I will be able to recognize syllabification. I may not understand the content of what is being said, but I will recognize that a sequence of different and distinct sounds are forming words and sentences.

When Chewbacca speaks, I don't hear anything that sounds like a coherent language:

Han Solo: ”Chewie? Chewie, is that you?”
Chewbacca: "Grrrwwwrr!"
Han Solo: ”Ch-Chewie! I can’t see, pal. What’s going on?”
Chewbacca: "Grrrwwwrr!"
Han Solo: ”Luke? Luke’s crazy! He can’t even take care of himself, much less rescue anybody.”
Chewbacca: "Grrrwwwrr!"
Han Solo: ”A Jedi Knight? Jeez, I’m out of it for a little while, everyone gets delusions of grandeur!”

Sorry, Han, I'm not buying that you're understanding one word of what Chewie is saying. In fact, I'm not buying that Chewie is saying anything at all. By the way, where did you get the word "Jeez"? That's a somewhat politer form of the exclamation "Jesus!". How would you know that? But I digress...

Allegedly, the wookie language is called "Shyriiwook". Hey, I wonder what the wookie word for "Shyriiwook" is? I'm guessing it's "Grrrwwwrr!". According to the link, here's a Basic sentence and the Shyriiwook translation:

He says he's a Jedi Knight now.
Rowr ahragh awf ahraroww rowh rohngr grgrff rf rf.

Whatever.

I guess I'm just a skeptic. Or as a wookie would phrase it, "Grrrwwwrr!".

lol!!!

I have had this conversation with friends and I agree. they didn't do a good enough job with Chewie's language. a growl or too is all he needs to complete an entire sentence? bah. it's not a bid deal, but you raise a good point.

Pfft. I can understand my cats through their vocal, body language and behaviour. Same thing goes with hamsters and other rodents(though less vocal XD). And that goes with a lot of animals for me grin It's not that I translate what they do into human tongue or anything.....-sigh-

Trust me, if someone flings a insult at you in another tongue, you may not understand what has been said, but you'll understand the implication behind it XD

Oh that reminds me. Apparently they used some bear vocalizations for Chewbacca happy

Think I'm crazy? I'm not. Because I have a feeling someones going to come a long and say that I am wrong or delusional.

Huttese sounds like a "real" language, though, with patterns etc... so it makes sense that Han could understand it. But Wookieese... hmmm. Apparently "Raawwgh" means "I found him in a junk pile". OK.

Speaking of understanding speech... I wonder if anyone besides Trandoshans understands the Trandoshan language. When Bossk says "rowwff" to Piett, he could have been saying, "Excuse me Admiral Piett, I know you're busy down there with all your computers and such, but the other guys and I just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate your hospitality in letting us attend this meeting on your beautiful new ship."
