I think that when it comes down to it George Lucas never really thought about this when he was making ANH and im shure he never thought ahead to the PT or much less to the Clone Wars tv seres. This is just a plot hole that will probably never be explained.

Except it's not a plot hole, since Obi-Wan never gives any indication that he doesn't remember R2. angry tongue

Until Obi-Wan hears the blue and brushed-steel astromech's operating number, he cannot _know_ 'who' it is or was or what it now portends. But he can certainly have very accurate suspicions based upon its own appearance, the goldenrod protocol droid, and the uncanny manner in which the droids ran into Luke, Owen and Beru before they reached their intended destination. Either R2 knew where to land and had to orbit a bit once out of range of the ISD, or the Force timed the battle just right so R2 could just jettison and hit Tatooine not too far from Obi-Wan's mailbox.

Compare Jackson's LOTR, where Gandalf withholds judgment until he has Frodo demonstrate the relative importance of the macguffin, the anonymous gold band. Gandalf's expression changes from suspicion to anxiety to fear to resolution.

By Frodo's demonstration, do you mean the writing-in-fire thing?

I doubt Obi-Wan forgot Artoo especially considering that he was coming from the Organas. Obi-Wan wasn't really into clarifying things for Luke anyway.

LUKE: "He claims to be the property of an Obi-Wan Kenobi. Is he a relative of yours? Do you know who he's talking about?"

BEN: "Obi-Wan Kenobi...Obi-Wan? Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time...a long time."

Obi-wan knows who Artoo is. He doesn't know it is him at first, when he first sees him. It is only as Luke reveals what Artoo has been saying and sees Threepio, and then Leia's message, that he realizes the truth. He's just not going to sit down and have a conversation with him, because there's a lot that he doesn't want to tell Luke yet. Not to mention he doesn't know if Artoo was wiped.

To be fair Obi Wan states he never remembered owning this droid and not that he doesn't remember the droid at all . And when he says it he has a smirk on his face .

Obi-Wan never owned R2. The latter either belonged to Padme or Anakin. And Obi-Wan had another droid - R4 during the time between AOTC and ROTS, when the latter was destroyed in the opening battle.

Obi-Wan had to remember R2. Especially since he was paired with C-3PO and who else by some random chance? Luke. If I were Obi-Wan and saw the three of them together, I'd probably either: A) Have an idea run by me that perhaps this was a sign that now was the time to begin training Luke, or B) Fear that R2 might have already told Luke about the past and start worrying about how to explain things to Luke. So it would make sense for Obi-Wan, unsure of which scenario may have occurred, to play things coy and gauge what the situation was before saying anything he didn't yet need to say. That's why he refers to R2 as his little friend. If he came right out and said "Hello there, R2. It's been awhile," he would have had quite a bit of explaining to do should Luke somehow overhear him. "Don't recall ever owning a droid before" is true because technically, he didn't. And R2 was more Anakin's droid sidekick than his own. And again, at this point he's still trying to be coy about the whole thing until he knows exactly what's going on.

Obi-Wan said he didn't remember owning any droid. However, R4 was assigned to him as opposed to being his "possession".
