Why is it that in ANH, the Empire attempts to blow up Yavin 4? Wouldn't have destroying Yavin Prime (The big orange one) have the same effect? I mean, the blast from that could have easily destroyed the moon, and even if it didn't, would meteorites destroy all life on Yavin 4?

And if that wasn't enpuigh, wouldn't the moon, no longer in an orbit, float off into the middle of no where, and due to a lack of heat kill everybody? I mean, isn't that a less time consuming tactic to use?

In all likelihood, the Death Star itself would've been destroyed in a blast big enough to destroy a large planet like Yavin 4. Also, from the Imperial point of view, there was really no need to go for such a messy solution. They didn't expect Rebel resistance to be any kind of threat, so they had the luxury of planning a relatvely surgical strike.

The Empire was trying to send a message to the rest of the galaxy. Destroying Yavin major would cause collateral damage to Yavin 4, but it might dilute the message the Empire was trying to send.

Yavin Major is a gas giant. They can't blow that up with the Death Star laser like they can a solid planet. And they can't shoot through it because the beam would be diffused.

Tarkin was looking to show the galaxy what the Death Star could do, so that fear of the battle station would keep them in line.

When she told him the Rebel Base was on Dantooine, he says the planet is too remote to be an effective demonstration, which is why he chose Alderaan.

Vader didn't trust Leia so he hid a tracking device on the falcon and allowed them to escape. Instead of trying to go to Dantooine, they followed the homing beacon instead.

Dantooine is in the Outer Rim and sparsely populated. Alderaan is in the Core and has a population of billions. Which do you think the galaxy would notice first?

It's not about blowing up the planet. It's about the political and social effects of blowing up the planet.

Here's a different 'why wait.'

Why does Obi-Wan wait so long to tell Luke to go to Yoda? Why not right after blowing up the Death Star? Why does he come to Luke when he is on the very edge off death. Luke could have just wrote it off as a hallucination. Not very smart on Obi-Wan's part.

I think the ability to appear to Luke was something he had to work at, and it's not like he waited very long. After the Death Star blew up, the Empire chased them to Hoth, where Obi-Wan appeared to him.

'Empire' was three years after Yavin, so it was quite awhile to wait.

It took Qui-Gon over 10 years to even appear as a disembodied voice.

Maybe it was a test. If you remember, Luke uses the force to retrieve his lightsaber in the cave. Mabye Obi-Wan waited to see if Luke believed in what he had already learnt before going to Yoda.

I guess it's one of things I never thought about. I knew that ESB was a few after the Battle of Yavin.

Still, I thought that in the time that they were on the run, Luke was getting a reputation. He was growing in of himself. There was the whole Force Ghost thing to consdier, which makes a lot of sense to me.

I always saw it as a timely progression. Luke was introduced to the Force in a quick way. Even by ESB he really didn't understand it. Perhaps there is something to be said about patience and choosing the right time.

But, I've no basis. I'm just conjecturing.
