I still think that Obi-wan chose a poor time to appear to Luke. The guy was on the very edge of death. What if Han wasn't there to save his frozen ass?

Yeah - maybe just bad timing on Kenobi - but that's the breaks - what if Luke had been having sex with some chick? What if Luke was sick with the flu and barfing, sick as a dog?

Would Kenobi have waited for better timing?

The first Death Star had a long recharge timer, if they have blew up the gas giant Yavin then they would have to wait a long time to attack the Rebels on Yavin IV.

I think that was the point - he knew Luke was in trouble and could very likely die and knew his appearance would give something for Luke to live for - more of a will to win than he might of had considering the struggle he faced at that moment. this is also achiveved by giving him the mission to find Yoda, something he does when he realises Luke is now force sensitive enough to begin proper training (his calling of the lightsaber from the snow was clearly some sort of passed test). in all honesty i think obi wan should share equal credit with Han for saving Luke in that situation.

Why does Obi-Wan wait so long to tell Luke to go to Yoda? Why not right after blowing up the Death Star?

Because then you would have had it as a scene that happened off-screen, inbetween the movies, and certain fans on here complaining "How did Luke end up on Dagobah?! Where's the scene where Luke finds out about Yoda?!?!! I'm meant to imagine it?!" :P Sorry to have be practical.
