Obi-Wan knew that if he told Luke the truth right off the bat, that Luke would chicken out because he would never believe in himself if he had to face Vader alone. By keeping it hidden, Luke was more prepared to understand the circumstances that the "lies' were made under, and thus more able to cope with the truth that he was told eventually.

I think it was Lucas' attempt at giving us a life lesson. "Sometimes the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view." To Obi-wan and Yoda, Anakin really was gone and had been destroyed by Darth Vader. Luke disagreed and believed Anakin still existed somewhere underneath the suit.

Differing points of view have been a theme running through the SW films:

"Good is a point of view, Anakin."

"Anakin, Chancellor Palpatine is evil." "In my view the Jedi are evil."

There was a also a deleted scene in TPM where Greedo and Anakin were fighting because Greedo thought Anakin cheated at the pod race. Qui-Gon told Anakin that he should just learn to tolerate Greedo's pov.

It would've been better if they'd stuck with the ANH plan and had it so that Kenobi wasn't lying at all.

Yep, but I'd sacrifice it for not having to endure a lot of the other stuff that followed said revelation!

Actually, Obi-Wan does say that, in the rotj novel.

Yeah, it's stellar. That two-minute scene where Ben lays out the facts about dad in the film goes for paragraphs, and obviously Ben was in a chatty mood that day, so I tend to figure that was when Ben finally got around to telling Luke things like what happened to his mother and so on.

I think that when I was a kid I was much too intrigued by the new aliens and such in the Jabba portion of the story and didn't appreciate the material concerning Anakin/Vader and the Emperor. In fact I'm not even sure I read the entire book.
