Shadows of the Empire wasn't what inspired the Special Editions. That was Jurassic Park, as it allowed Lucas to realize that he could beef up the special effects and put in things that he may have wanted to do in '77 but was unable to. Besides, adding in scenes of Xizor would add absolutely nothing to the movies. It would only confuse people, because you shouldn't have to rely on EU material to understand something in the films.
So..if Jurassic Park was the inspiration for the SEs, could we have a pack of Velociraptors replace the Ewoks?
