Most people remember Yoda as the old frog puppet - I know CGI Yoda in the OT would kill me. However, I'd like to see them digitally add some subtle mouth movements, blinks and more facial expression.

And I'd also be up for a few CGI shots in the Obi-Wan/Vader fight, if they are believable. At least one lightsaber twirl from Obi-Wan, please.

Any new edition of the OT would have to be an extended edition to make it worthwhile, not unlike the way The Godfather Saga was re-edited for TV in the 1970s, or the LOTR DVDs.

The Godfather stuff wasn't an extended edition IIRC, just an unnecessary reorganization into chronological order.

There were a couple of different TV versions, but the first one done in the 1970s (officially dubbed 'The Godfather Saga') was not only re-edited in chronological order, it included a mass of scenes that had been deleted from the theatrical releases (must be at least an hour or more overall).
The deleted scenes included in the recent DVD box set come directly from this & a couple of other TV versions - the picture is 4:3 as a result (one scene even includes the TV end credits over it). 'The Godfather Saga' was also available at one point on VHS.

Since Shadows of the Empire was what inspired George Lucas to do the Special edtions I would add a few scenes of Prince Xizor to a new hope and Empire strikes back.

Shadows of the Empire wasn't what inspired the Special Editions. That was Jurassic Park, as it allowed Lucas to realize that he could beef up the special effects and put in things that he may have wanted to do in '77 but was unable to. Besides, adding in scenes of Xizor would add absolutely nothing to the movies. It would only confuse people, because you shouldn't have to rely on EU material to understand something in the films.

Just the Outrider, as far as I know.

As Arawn said, it was just The Outrider, and that was put in as an Easter egg. That's where the line should be drawn, at Easter eggs. You can't start throwing in whole scenes because you can't expect those who aren't familiar with the EU to keep up and know what's going on.

The only way Xizor could be believably added to any of the films is as a background character. The question, though, is which background would it make sense for him to be present at? thinking

When you ask that question, you come to the determination that there are no scenes for him to be placed into the background of. There's just nothing in ANH or TESB that would make any sense. You would have to add in a new scene, which shouldn't happen.

A list I already posted for my special edition ideas was quite controversial in another thread - not that I blame anyone for discussing it, I'd just rather not discuss them again because I believe it's more just varying opinions, something that can't really be debated.

I will say, though, that while I think Hayden Christensen as Anakin in ROTJ makes sense and was delighted when first seeing it, I agree with other posters about removing the Jabba scene in ANH. Jabba's character's quite weak compared to the crime lord we know in ROTJ. And I couldn't see him going all the way to a cantina to find someone instead of having him brought to the palace.

I think most would agree that the lighting could be improved in most shots, so here's a few edits I've done as tests to make everything brighter and more vibrant.

Good attempts, but I think I prefer the originals. You have the contrast too high in some of these shots, the whites especially are too bright and look washed out.

My special edition would be getting rid of the changes I didn't like. So the things I would restore are:

-Original krayt dragon sound
-Original Mos Eisley
-Han shot first
-Original Emperor scene in ESB, or at least keep the dialogue the same
-"You're lucky you don't taste very good" would be back
-Original song in Jabba's palace would be back
-Yub Nub would be back
-Sebastian Shaw as the ghost would be back.

Jabba's scene in ANH can stay.

Yoda in ANH is a bad idea in my opinion. It spoils the revealing of who Yoda is in Empire Strikes Back. If you are watching the movies in the order of the story, I guess that already happens in the prequels, but in the original trilogy by itself, the reveal of who Yoda is should remain in tact.

For the most part, the Special Edition variants caused more problems than they solved. Beyond some basic cleaning and lighting, I would more or less restore all three films to how they were in their original releases. The old dragon calls and the old music dance numbers etc. The one exception, the one thing I would leave is Jabba in ANH. This is something George wanted in the film but didn't have the budget for in 1977. Really Jabba was not much of a mystery and I think it makes that sub-plot work better.

Beyond that one change, I would mostly just clean them up and update some special effects. Nothing crazy.

The Battle of Endor, especially the space theatre, needs a major editing overhaul. Many off-sync call signs and scenes, and I feel the tide turns too early: the Emperor's death should have resulted in chaos, dismay and disorganization amongst the Imperial forces and led to the turning points in the battle. It seems like the Rebel fleet takes control of the battle too soon.
