Perhaps to emphasise the frontier nature of the place, where a family might have to bury their dead on their own land, like in a Western? Either that, or he's trying to create an urban myth similar to the one which says that in one shot from The Wizard Of Oz you can see the corpse of one of the Munchkin actors who committed suicide, hanging from a tree in the background.
